In jazz, chorus has a specific meaning: the part of the song after the verse (which is seldom played). The chorus is then repeated until the ending. It's usually 32 bars in the form AABA. In a blues, it's the 12 or 16 bars that are repeated. Remember when Paul Gonsalves played umpteen choruses at Ne...

Chas, my question was meant to be rhetorical if not philosophical. Obviously music can strike a chord in our brain's pleasure zones. And when that pleasure isn't coming often enough, we complain. A good perfomance is like a good book. Every time you listen to it or read it, the pleasure zone gets st...

It's great for harmonizing melody notes. For example, if the chart calls for a I delta and the melody contains a ninth and/or a major seventh, the pedal works great.

On my GFI, I can adjust how far the lever hangs down and the length of travel. My advice is to let it hang down as low as possible as long as you can still get your knee under it and can close your case without having to readjust it. Then, as previously mentioned, choose the shortest travel possible...

Tuning the Bb on C6

I'm finding that my ears are wanting two different Bbs on my C6 neck. The Bb that I want for Cm7 or F11--pedal 6 plus the 4th-string raise--is distinctly sharper than the Bb my ears want for C7--no pedals and the 4th-string raise. Am I tuning my E's and A's and the Eb too sweet?

I'd love to try a sacred-steel tuning. My favorite kind of blues playing features major thirds and 6th tones--like take-off guitar or what many R&B pianists play--as well as minor thirds, flatted sevenths and flatted fifths. I find the chord style blues more easily on E9 than C6. If you got a gi...

Theresa, that wouldn't explain the much lesser decline in the other genres' sales. I think the best solution for a healthier Country Music industry is to wrest a bunch of broadcasting licenses away from the radio oligopoly and get a more diverse product on the market. Radio is the cataract in the fl...

Jim, I have indeed and dig 'em. What I was lamenting was Country Music. Western Swing is still great, thank God. We're lucky to have Tom Morrel, AATW, The Time Jumpers, et al. Country, on the other hand, doesn't make enough use of the great pickers around. Remember Hank's Honky Tonkin'? A major coun...
