Pedal 7 or 5 and 6 whole step raise?

Post by Tom Campbell »

I'm trying to figure out the use for pedal 7 on a Universal setup. It usually raises strings 5 and 6 a whole step...that is B to C# and G# to A#. About the only thing I can find is a diminished 6th when the Eb's are used in conjunction with the 5 and 6 raise. Is this change necessary or important?
Any comments are appreciated!

It's a standard C6th change, so it might help to think of it with your E's lowered to the B6th position. At the first fret it gives you a Cmaj9 and an Em7.

Try using it while playing 7th string as root note. It gives a dom9th on strings 7 6 5 4 3.
Try playing it w R-foot while holding Aped or A+F or A+B w left foot playing strings 6 5 4 3.
Try 6 5 4 3 w A+B (left foot) press P7(R-Foot)m and release B pedal at the same time.
A very necessary change on the universal and on the regular E9 too IMO.

It's great for harmonizing melody notes. For example, if the chart calls for a I delta and the melody contains a ninth and/or a major seventh, the pedal works great.

It is the 7th pedal on the standard C6 pedal setup. It is just as important as 5 or 6; or another of the standard changes on this neck. So on universals it simply belongs there just as any other change.

The only pedal (C6 setup) that is usually given up on universals is pedal 4. This was sacrificed because most readily admit it is seldom used.
