Here's my top 3. narrowing it down further is impossible. Together Again Lloyd Maines on James Hand's "Leave the Lonely Alone" (which I couldn't find a link to on the internet) Jeremy Wakefield on Wayne Hancock's "Goin Back to Texas" (probably the reason I took up steel in the fi...

Parts for an old MSA

Hi, I've been scouring the web looking for parts for my MSA, I believe it's in the neighborhood of the 1970's. I know psgparts was the place to go but his site is still down. Does anybody have any other suggestions for where I might find them?

I also am no slant expert but when I started learning slants I found my bar to be too long and heavy and I had to rely on my wrist alot. I got a lighter shorter bar and it made it much easier to let my fingers do the work and find that "secret compartment".

I don't know about any standard ten string tunings aside from the pedal tunings but those might be a good place to start. What I would suggest is think about the voicings you want and put them together. I added a G# to the top of my standard 8 string A6 tuning and it lets me gets some of the don hel...

Playing "Expressively"

It blows my mind what a player can do with an instrument when He (or she) is able to control every aspect of it's sound. Like how Brian May would play clearly distinctive string, brass, flute, and clarinet parts on his guitar and make arrangements using only the guitar that mimic an entire orchestra...

I believe He also play steel on "down by the seaside" off Physical Graffiti. cool stuff! It sounds like more than one string being moved to make those heavy vibrato chord hits so I don't think it's a B bender. Here's a little bit of an interview with Jimmy page from '77. On "Tangerine...

It sounds like he's come a long way as a steel player in the last few years. I remember he played a little steel on one of their first albums and it was tasteful as his playing always is but on this new album he actually sounds like a steel player. it's cool!

Dominant 7 - E9

I'm having difficulty finding a dominant 7 chord on my E9 neck other than the open one using the second string. I'm trying to find one that is close to the ab pedals down position. for example if I'm playing an E with a&b down on fret 7 what's the closest E7?

Sign me up mike! I'm dying to learn! J. I totally agree with what you said, and that's more or less what I've been doing. I just want it to be like math. once I know 2 plus 2 is 4 I can use that anywhere that it's applicable.

The link doesn't work. but I'd definitely love to hear it! I played around with those scales today. I really like the way the Cmaj sits over the Fmaj7 chord, but I didn't really have much time with it. This is an ambitious tune for sure, but it's forcing me to learn alot of things I've been wanting ...

Thanks Mike! That's exactly the kind of input I was looking for! Its definitely pretty difficult for me to take things apart on that level. but it's very helpful. I'll try to approach it that way. so far my approach has just been scrambling for notes that sounded okay. (Which always ends up with the...

like so many players on the forum I am relatively new the the steel and trying to learn improvisation. It's a tough ride let me tell you! I feel like I usually start out with a couple good ideas but they never really come to fruition. I Usually "lose it" about halfway through a line. Anywa...

I generally curl but don't tuck. it lets me easily tuck so I can use my pinky knuckle for chiming harmonics or extend to use the length of my pinky to rake harmonics. but maybe I'm just a middle of the road kind of guy.

this kind of goes against my religion (I'm a tube guy all the way) but, I was wondering if anyone out there uses one of those little battery amps for practicing like the danelectro honeytone.. the idea here being I need to be able to play the lap steel while sitting on the bank of a river and am cur...

I'm certainly not trying to disregard any tuning methods used by far better steelers than myself, but pitch is a property of perceived sound. frequency is a property of a vibration or electronic signal. and while they are certainly related, what we perceive as "in tune" is not necessarily ...

Scale length also seems to play a big part in what tunings can be achieved with what gauges. A buddy of mine dropped his C6 down to an A6 on his shorter scale guitar and said the low strings sounded loose an muddy. but if I drop my C6 down to an A6 with the same gauges on my longer scale guitar it's...

I use an old 1948 Gibson Br-9. I got it for about 200 bucks and it's everything you would want out of a low watt tube amp for steel. you might look for one.. the GA-5 is pretty cool too. it's alot like the BR-9 just about 60 years newer!

Well Gary, I don't know much about making a non pedal sound like a pedal but it sure can cry. I've heard guys like Kayton Roberts and jerry byrd squeeze more tear drops out of their non pedal than most pedal players I've heard. here's Kayton playing some heartbreaking steel! http://www.youtube.com/w...
