Ribbon Mics
The Royer R-121s have their reputations for a reason. A lot of people don't realize that they have a figure 8 pickup pattern and the front and back sides sound different. I think the back side is a little warmer. They also sound fabulous for drums and in front of horns. If anyone is interested, I ha...

Fulawka SD10 laquer body
Ed is not a young man and I suspect that he won't be building a whole lot more guitars. A guitar that is old-world craftsmanship like this, this gorgeous and made by this artisan, does not come around very often. Now is the time to snap this one up, otherwise I may decide to keep it. It is worth eve...

Sadly, due to a money crunch I must sell my Fulawka. This guitar is one of Ed Fulawka's masterpieces! I purchased this from Bruce Snow (original owner) in 2010 and it has stayed in my studio. It is a gorgeous SD10 Laquer body with 4 pedals & 5 knees. This guitar is in the same fabulous condition...

Recording engineer asks "Who do you want to sound like?"
In my opinion, this is a silly question from a recording engineer. The recording engineer's job is to get the sound coming from the instrument(any instrument)on tape or hard drive as close to possible the sound as the original sound produced from the instrument. After that the producer works with th...

Add Drum Machine To Click Track?
If you are using a drum machine, why not record it first instead of the click track? I can understand that adding the drum machine lets you add fills, intros, etc. after the other instruments are in and may be more musically adaptable. If you are using a DAW with midi capabilities for recording, I'v...

Best way to record using backup tracks?
Jarold, First of all you need to keep your tracks as .wav files when you can. The .mp3 file format is a compressed file format and the sound quality is not as good as a .wav file. I would suggest that you always record "dry". If you use reverb, EQ, etc. when recording it can't be undone. H...

Dry Steel track...What Pro Tools Pluggins should I use?
Paul, I have gotten some really sweet sounding steel tracks that were recorded dry with the following: 1) Fairchild 660 compressor. Don't go with more than about 3db gain reduction as this is mostly for a slightly warmer sound. 2) EQ to taste... see above replies for ideas. 3) TL Space reverb. I ten...

suggestions? for scratch drums
Tom, I have to plead ignorance on Garage Band even though I use an iMac in my studio. I'm running ProTools 8.04 (upgrading to 9 as soon as I have time). However, I have found that EZDrummer with their Nashville expansion pack gives you a wonderful sound. It may not replace a live drummer, but can be...

Roland 2480 to Pro Tools
Scotty, After looking at the information on the Roland website, it appears that transferring via CD is probably your only option. The only other possibility I see is not worth the trouble and may not work. ----- An except from Roland Q&A: Q: Can the SCSI devices such as MO(230MB/640MB/1.3GB), 25...

If your PC based, people are dropping PTools and moving to Reaper. Many of my clients are bringing in their projects on it. It's a wonderful program. It's free as long as you're evaluating it! Greg, I don't know anything about your clientel, but I don't think there is any mass exodus from ProTools ...

How do I upgrade pro tools 8 to 8.04
Scotty, The settings/preferences are pretty important for performance with Protools. There are a bunch of them... a lot of research may be needed to understand them all. If you have specific question I may be able to help. At one time I was very proficient in how PTLE should be set up. Some things h...

Tips on getting the "old" sound
If possible, go analog (no digital) all the way. Record to tape thru an analog console, use tube amps, etc.

Hi Scotty,
The Avid website is pretty difficult to navigate. I just filled out a little survey today and let them know about it haha.
Here's the cs updates page:

Bought a MAC ... Got questions
Scott, I just did a quick bit of research and PTLE 8.0.3 and higher does not support the orignal Mbox. There are quite a few versions of the Mbox, but if you've got the old original it is being "retired" and will be no longer supported for any future versions. If it's an Mbox 2, Pro, etc. ...

Bought a MAC ... Got questions
Scott, I am in the middle of making the migration from PC to Mac myself. I bought an iMac. I'm not real sure if I understand the message your getting, but you need a dedicated drive for your audio files. Most people use an external firewire drive such as a Glyph drive. Firewire is the preferred port...

It would seem to me that there is something missing from this thread. The question arises in my mind "Do you want speakers to make the music sound good, or do you want studio monitors"? There is a major difference in function. Speakers is the term most commonly associated with home stereo ...

"George Guard" 112 knob protector
I just received mine, and very quickly I might add. Although I haven't had a chance to install it yet, it looks good and does what it is supposed to do - protect the knobs on a NV112. For the price of $20 you can't go wrong. Keep up the good work, George! We need more "outide the box" thin...

I use Acronis True Image and a hard drive docking station in my studio to clone my system drive every time I do an update so if anything goes wrong I can very easily restore everything to it's previous state. I've used several software packages, but for me Acronis is the simplest, quickest and most ...
