Just bought it on the Canadian iTunes. Listening now as I eat my breakfast. Great stuff Fred! Keep the music coming. It sure would be cool if you ever played Vancouver (or even Seattle or Portland). Although, I know we're a bit of a ways away...

A couple of the tuners on my Goldtone have been slipping and I was wanting to replace them with better ones. Could they be Schallers? Like these: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/Schaller_Tuners/Schaller_M-6_Guitar_Machines.html?tab=Pictures#details I think the Beard r...

I saw Cindy a few weeks back with Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women. She played dobro and her Sierra 8 string. The show was awesome and it was a masterclass just watching her respond to what her bandmates were playing. Tasteful and musical. The tune Boss Of The Blues was swinging! Here's a version fro...

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think I'll go a tad lighter, just to be safe. It's actually my wife's old acoustic that she "lent" me. My marriage is more important than slightly improved tone!

heavier strings on a converted acoustic lap = danger?

Hello, I decided to put some heavier strings on an old Samick acoustic that I'd converted to lap (DADF#AD). I've been using D'Addario EJ16s for a year or so but needed heavier melody strings. I put my squareneck stings on (EJ42s) and they sound really good. They're 56,45,35,28,18,16. I assume they'r...

This tuning looks really cool, Mike. I've found the minor triad to be one of the most useful tools for jazz improv on standard guitar and am trying to explore it on steel. A book called Jazz Guitar Structure by Andrew Green has an excellent chapter on minor triads that stuck in my brain and I've use...

Awesome video.
I'm wondering if one of the women winding pickups is Abigail Ybarra. She was the main winder there and thought of as an icon by today's Fenderheads.

I use a Visual Sound Route 66. It's the one with 2 effects in one: an excellent TS-8 style distortion plus a pretty useful compressor. The nice thing is there's a switch for both effects so you can choose either or both with a single foot stomp.

I recently picked up a Walworth and it's pretty good. It has a nice weight to it and it's small enough to fit within the smaller clearance you get with an acoustic with nut raiser. The only downside is you need to really fiddle with lining it up with the fret. Not a big deal when you're at home. I t...

If the pot is defective (I guess that's still tbd) I personally, would replace it. I picked up a 58 Fender Esquire that had worn out tuners, and a bad switch. I replaced them and put the originals in a baggie and stored them away in my safety deposit box. I love the guitar and the replaced parts don...

I have one of these but the strings attach at the bridge rather than the end of the guitar. It looks like the bridge has been replaced and the string attachment moved. I love the sound of these btw!

I use the matching fishman pickup and aura pedal. The pickup is worth the price IMHO. I have used them in gigs from outdoor festivals to coffee houses and can't live without them. I also saw Jerry Douglas with Elvis Costello a few weeks back and it sounded amazing (of course!).

My review of the Jerry Douglas pickup and Aura pedal

Well, I took the plunge and got the Fishman JD pickup installed in my Goldtone PBS and bought the Aura pedal. I figured I'd pass on my thoughts. I play in a loud country rock band (mainly electric but some steel and dobro) and of course had no way of hearing myself. I bought everything through Beard...

I picked up a cheap makeup bag from the dollar store. It's about 5 x 5 inches with a side pouch with snap button. It cost about $5 and holds my Shubb (for dobro), Jerry Byrd bar and picks. I have a habit of forgetting things so I put everything needed for lap and dobro all in one place no matter if ...

hello from newbie!

Hello all. Brand new to the forum! After lurking about for a while and reading tons of useful information I figured I should join the party! I've been playing electric guitar for 32 years but last year I figured I should learn lap steel and dobro to augment my arsenal and hopefully get more gigs. A ...
