Is this (click me) a sitar bar on LeAnn Rimes' "Something's Gotta Give"? There's no electric sitar in the credits, but Dan Dugmore is on steel, and Dan Huff, JT Corenflos, and Tom Bokuvac are on the guitar. There's also a keyboard, but it doesn't sound like it came from a keyboard synth. I...

I'd like to make a few corrections/additions to my above post. Firstly, I was incorrect, Mike Johnson, Russ Pahl, and Rusty Danmyer layed down steel on Dierks Bentley's first, self-titled album; Gary Morse did not record any steel for that album. My apologies to the above mentioned players. Second, ...

Hi Charles, Gary Morse did all the pedal steel on Dierks' two albums. You can email Gary yourself (he's a Forum member and a nice, patient guy), but I'll reckon the answer to your studio question is he used a Sho~Bud pedal steel and a Fender Steel King amp. I know this is his preferred equipment. I ...

Ken, the steel on Brad Paisley's "You Have That Effect On Me" was actually played by the fabulous Mike Johnson. The talented Randle Currie played on Brad's later albums, Mud On The Tires and his newest, Time Well Wasted . I would not consider "You Have That Effect On Me" a hit as...

I saw Gaylon Matthews at the Gretchen Wilson show last night in Atlanta. What an excellent picker! He was right up there in the mix, and boy, he sure made that Rains and Fender Steel King sound good! He really shined on the ballads, "When I Think About Cheatin'", and my favorite, "I D...

Seeking six-string instr. around Fayette Co., GA

Howdy guys, I hope this is the right place to post this, but here goes. I my little brother is hoping to get a guitar for his birthday that's coming up. The family lives in Peachtree City, about fifteen minutes from Fayetteville, but I'm here in Athens, so as much as I'd love to teach him, I only se...

it would be helpful if we students had a standard from which to measure our progress
As a student and beginner, I respectfully disagree. Metrics are not the means to an end. Measurement of musicality is qualitative; music is not quantifiable, because it is an art.

Tony, your doubts are substantiated. Most scientific studies (the kind that get published in scientific, peer-reviewed journals, the ones like these ) have shown perfect pitch is not a ubiquitously teachable skill. It is a talent that is cultivable in those who are born with it. You are born with th...

Jim, even though you have to change up your note selection for another genre, you don't have to change the sound of the pedal steel to sound like anything other than a pedal steel. Take Paul Franklin's work with the Dire Straits, or Greg Leisz with the Intercontinentals, or BJ Cole with Shania Twain...
