Larry, Well, as I said, the is particular amp had two wrong coupling caps installed, a missing transistor and two bad transistors. It took me a lot of time to understand and troubleshoot it due to: 1. I don't do a lot of solid state 2. I only work on amps occasionally so I'm rusty 3. the documentati...

Wow, sounds like you need to re-solder every single component hole or else you will have them constantly failing. Can you take a picture of that? I wonder if that was a bad solder job in the manufacturing.

I spent a fair amount of time recently repairing a Session 400 so I'm interested in these amps and their sheer vast power levels. Yes, the power amp stage has a couple legs of power transistors in parallel, so if the current path is broken on one leg, the others are still there and will drive the sp...

I can't say if that is a volume pedal pot, it's just a random pot to me, other folks may know.
It is a 500k resistance as opposed to a 1 meg, so that's different.
You can try it, nothing will blow up, see how it works.

OK, well, any 1 megohm, audio taper potentiometer that will fit will work. but you have to match the shaft diameter and style to the existing knob, and match the mounting method to the hole in the chassis, both of these to avoid modifying the chassis, and the of course overall diameter / box dimensi...

Also, from the part number, it's a 1 megohm resistance, the "A" means audio (logarithmic) taper, and the 8833 is the date code showing the pot was made in the 33rd week of 1988.

Yes, tone controls are usually potentiometers. how is it broken? Is this image correct for the innards of the unit? https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--twWJbthT--/f_auto,t_large/v1631651908/vr6q6dc67hgdmi4p9bxq.jpg In this schematic, the tone pot only has two connections: https://bb.steelguita...

Just to beat the dead horse Most "amps" actually have several stages of amplification in them - guitar amps are like this -- each stage does a certain job, like maybe amplifying just the voltage or just the current (because each circuit can really only do one thing well), or flipping the p...

I also recorded all the DC bias voltages for all the transistors (except the power TO-3's) and I plan on adding those to the schematic at some point as a public service. If anybody has a good way of getting these onto the PDF schematic, let me know, (I don't have a way of modifying pdf's). We can ad...

Peavey Session 400 repair

I repair amps as a hobby. I recently repaired a 1978 Peavey Session 400 amp (no cab, just the chassis). I wanted to post to record my observations. Being from Southern Cal, the home of Fender, I will say that for rock musicians around here, Peavey has never had a very stellar name for one reason or ...

I recommend putting in a whole step raise on the 7th string, usually actuated by the RKL lever -- now the 7th string acts like another "A" pedal. Also get an easy unison with the 6th string.

Yeah, on second listen the player seems to be holding back or maybe just inexperienced? But what's cool is just the use of the pedal steel by this fairly big indie artist out of Seattle.
