If using Bob's approach still doesn't balance the 2 power amps, you could pad the output with a pot (which is what your original question was). Depending on what volume pedal you have and how it's wired, it could do the trick for you. I don't think it would hurt anything to try it.

Anybody tried the JJ KT77's?

Have any of you tried the JJ KT77's? What do they sound like? I'm looking for more crunch with one of my modded SF Bassmans for guitar. I've got a dwindling supply of a variety of NOS American tubes and I'm willing to try any of the new production tubes.

You don't happen to have a picture of that one, do you?

You do some fine work.

Sure like that blonde tolex.... This may be off the subject, but another popular guitar combo is to build a 2x10 combo cab for your bassman. It's easier packin', cause it's shorter. It's also easier to create a 4 ohm load. <font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center"...

How about this compromise. If you absolutely have to have a _____ colored stringmaster, buy one that's already been refinished. As I see it, since it's no longer a virgin anyway, you can do no more harm to it by repainting it ______. And then sell the 'chipped, faded, ugly' one to somebody seeking o...

Walter, Which browser are you using? I've been using Internet Explorer 6.x, and it lets me copy the files out. You may not be on the right file. They should be several meg in size. You can find the cache directory by going to 'tools', 'internet options', 'settings', and write down the path under 'Te...

Before giving up and replacing them all, have you dug through all dead machine buckets at your local music stores? If it's only one machine, just fix that one. It takes a big soldering iron but you can get them off and back on. I was lucky enough to find a usable gear to repair one of the machines o...

A couple of people make stringmaster pickups, if you want that sound. Jason Lollar makes both 8 and 10 string versions. Seymour Duncan also makes a set; 11034-41 & -42 front side and rear-side pickup for stringmaster.

Dan, Amazing variety of stuff on that site! It's become one of my favorites. You can save them by copying them out of your browser cache after fully loading. Locate them by sorting by size. Copy them out to another directory and save with a *.flv extension. Then use an FLV player like one of the one...

Steven, Here's another angle. Don't glue the whole seam, and here's why. Yes, the sections were just held together by dowels using hyde glue, just like furniture of the era. The good thing about hyde glue is that it is water soluble, allowing you to disassemble the instrument if necessary. When I go...

Seeking info on BeJay guitars built by Ben Jack.

Folks, Does anyone have any info on BeJay steel guitars, built by Ben Jack? A google search turned up that a factory fire in 1963 ended production. I did a search on this forum and could not find any posts from Ben Jack after 2003 or so. Is he still with us? I just looked at a double-nine (S.N. 1307...

Louie, As many as Valco made, one's sure to pop up. But, in the event it doesn't, you can easily make one. My '42 New Yorker has a similiar cover. Flip it over and you can see that it's actually made from 3 pieces of wood glued together and painted black. I would guess the later ones were made out o...

Jon, For this conversation slaving amps is driving a second amp off the output of the first. The first amp (typically tube) has the desirable tone, but not enough volume. You could slave your DR into a TR, but you are going to have to make the TR tonally 'neutral'. It could be done. Another combo wo...

Have you tried slaving your DR? If so what success have you had?
Also, has anybody A/B'd a 4-6L6 cathode bias vs. a 4-6L6 fixed bias config?
Thanks,

That's amazing. One other thought after noticing the date. Amazing what Cabin Fever will motivate a man to do to maintain his sanity. Late Winter's the worst. I know it drove my dad to playing accordian.

Fred, Because the fretboards were painted on the earlier New Yorkers, I don't think most people know they were made from brass. The brass fretboard ones seemed to be fairly common, as far as New Yorkers go. My '42 New Yorker is black painted brass, as is the fretboard on my '47(48?) Hawaiian 8(?). M...

Rich,
You're in luck, I found the schematic. It's small and a little difficult to make out. I'll see if I can make a clean scan of it. If not, I may have to just photocopy it and mail it to you.
I'll keep you posted.

Scott, Are you still looking for a schematic? Somewhere around here I have one for mine 'cause I started modding it immediately after buying it used in '75. From what I remember, the basic layout is similiar to a twin, in fact from the phase inverter back it's identical to a BF twin. The one odd tub...
