I’m a decade cusper. I migrated from slide guitar to lap steel in 2009 when I was 25. Within a year and a half I entered the world of pedals and levers — my fingers were starting to bleed from trying cop pedal steel licks by bending behind the bar while sliding it!

The pedal steel has fit in some very interesting contexts when I have played in services. I have played with different folks leading, sometimes folky, sometimes more modern rock, and sometimes "contemporary CCM". I change what I play depending on that, but I usually receive a good response...

Jon, I remembered this post last night and snapped a picture of my teal Stage One. I frequently get compliments on the color and sound. (There aren't many pedal steels in my playing circles). http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix1205/10884_image_1.jpg Doug, I like the looks of the new Encore. I lov...

I started using the pedals much like a mad scientist! The Scientist: Before I even had one I was studying what pedals and levers did from a theory perspective. I figured through in my head what moves would get me which sounds. And I mimicked the moves before my guitar arrived. The Mad: What happens ...

WalMartin

A while back a cousin bought me a First Act guitar from WalMart as a joke. It had high action and would go out of tune any time I fretted a note. I wouldn't give it away because it would discourage anyone from wantin to learn, but I just couldn't bear throwing it out. A few years pass and I realize ...

My favorite pedaling footwear are my soft-soled (crepe?) Minnetonka moccasins. Another option for me are a set of Tom's. They are fairly snug on my foot and have a tad sturdier sole than my moc's. If you haven't heard of Tom's shoes, their business premise is donating 1 pair of shoes to children in ...

I had a post referencing a similar video a few weeks ago with the title Slide Rings... Creative way to get those sounds! Peaceland makes slide rings for guitar, so you can have varying slide lengths on different fingers for different effects, diverging harmonies, etc. It looks like they also make so...

Major Sevenths

After spending some time working with 6-string versions of C6 and A6, I still get bummed out when I go to do a full strum major seventh and just can't get it (anyone else have trouble slanting across four strings?). The C6 pedal tuning interests me with the Fmaj7 built in. With the strings on n...

Thurlon, I'm a twenty-something year old on the other side of the Susquehanna.
Even now I find myself reminiscing of past bands and venues, and many good times.

Where were some places you used to play in the area, and what were some of your favorite songs and styles to play?

Austin City Limits - Americana Festival from the Ryman

Did anyone else catch ACL this past weekend? There were quite a few acts that I really enjoyed, and the house band made it bearable for the few I didn't :).
Greg Leisz was on steel... I muchly enjoyed his playing, especially the non-traditional playing in Robert Plant's song!

It was amazing to realize the amount of dexterity required to play steel guitar, and have sometimes wondered how I would cope if I no longer had them.
Furthermore, I am encouraged to see many innovations that allow folks to learn or continue to play an instrument!

Slide Rings

About 6 months before I purchased a pedal steel, I set up my 6 string lap steel to mimic the D - high E strings on E9 pedal steel. This also allowed me to retune to A6 or C6 fairly easily. I worked hard at learning slants and also string pulls that a PSG does (primarily A & B pedals), as well as...

I was surprised to see that part done on a lap steel... The vibe on the album reminds me more a glass slide on an electric.

The song or other players in a band will sway which, if any, effects I use. I view them as I would a 'colour' chord. The listener can get fatigued if they are always bombarded with an effect. It would be similarly irritating if we would play a set only using 6th interval runs, or 7th chords. Applied...

Since you are wanting to sound like a pedal steel, are you thinking that you may someday end up sitting at the helm of one? On my pursuits of making a 6-string lap steel sound like a pedal steel, I eventually decided to just take strings (in order) from a pedal steel setup. For 6 I used (low-to-high...
