Yeah, I think it's the warm, liquid tube tone that I'm in love with, and not just the Fender Super Reverb. From what I've read, 12" or 15" speakers are the way to go for steel guitars. I don't understand why. But I'm no longer content with solid state tone.

Help! My ears have been ruined by a Fender Super Reverb!

I've been playing my lap steels through various amps; a Roland Jazz Chorus, a Carvin 2x12, all solid state. My band leader rearranged his studio recently for rehearsal and I ended up playing through his vintage Fender Super Reverb. My GeorgeBoard S-8 and Melobar Rattler have NEVER sounded so good! :...

OK, I'm going to rephrase my question. Given that there often isn't enough room on the stage for me to bring three amps, is there a effects pedal or rack module that will emulate steel guitar amp tone when played through my Roland KC-550? Perhaps this is an impossible request, but I know a lot of pe...

Anyone have experience with the Peavey Tubefex?

I play several instruments, and due to small stages, I try to limit the number of amplifiers that I bring. Here's my current setup and my question. :) Keyboard through BBE 482i Sonic Maximizer to Roland KC-550 keyboard amp. :) Goldtone PBSM resophonic guitar with Jerry Douglas Under Saddle Pickup th...

My first lap steel was a Chandler RH2, and I like the sound. For a real fat sound, that sounds good overdriven, I got a Melobar Rattler, and replaced the Bill Lawrence pickup with a Seymour Duncan 59 model. Very nice sound. Eventually I got interested in 8-string lap steels and quit playing the 6-st...

Beautiful guitar! I love Tele's (I have two of them) and yours must sound great. Since my original post a lot has happened. I got an 8-string steel guitar (GeorgeBoards) and lost interest in 6-string steel guitars. The only 6-string I play any more is a Gold Tone solid mahogany resophonic guitar, an...

Thanks for building such fabulous guitars

I bought the lady-of-ill-repute guitar, an S-8 console, and had it repainted. It is now bright blue with fade-to-black on both ends. I've been gigging with it for several months, and the tone is TO DIE FOR! Thanks again.

Volume pedal: 500K vs. 10K for two different steel guitars

I've decided to get a Goodrich volume pedal. I'm playing a GeorgeBoard S-8 console (LOVE IT!!!) and a Melobar Rattler. The GB has a Lindy Fralin single coil pickup, if I remember correctly. I'm putting a Seymour Duncan 59 model humbucker in the Melobar, because the Kent Armstrong sounds a little wim...

I also have a GeorgeBoard S-8 with legs. I have only played 3 different steel guitars--there are none in the stores locally here, but my GeorgeBoard has tone TO DIE FOR. :D I am totally in love with the tone and playability, both clean and overdriven. I'm playing "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and...

I just read this thread. I also am playing keyboards, nonpedal steel, harmonica and mandolin in a 5-piece band. I use Shure in-ear monitors. I don't want to carry 3 amps around, so I'm thinking of using a preamp/DI box for the steel guitar. Mack, what gear are you using now?

I love using in-ear monitors. I use the Shure E-3s and E-5s. For keyboards and guitar the E-3s are OK for me. For playing bass, I want the E-5s. We use the Aviom system at church, and the Behringer headphone amp for rock and country gigs. I much prefer them over floor monitors, because I can keep th...

Asking for advice re playing through a direct box

I'm playing keyboards and lap steel in a country band. I got a GeorgeBoard--with tone TO DIE FOR. :) I have a keyboard, a keyboard rack mount rig, a keyboard combo amp, my GeorgeBoard on its legs, and at times a Melobar Rattler on my lap. Here's my question. I'm trying to get really good tone, but a...

The video clip I saw was Carrie Underwood singing live at some awards ceremony. The steel guitarist was playing a 6-string Lap King Rodeo model, no pedals. The actual guitar builder noted the video clip on this forum, I just can't find the thread with the search function here. It's a beautiful guita...

Oof! Pardon my small brain, but I didn't find the links mentioned above very helpful. I've been playing C6 tuning on a non-pedal steel for about 6 months now, first on 6-string, and now on 8-string (ACEGACG, low to high). Here are 3-note chords for the C-major scale, in an ascending scale: [tab] I I...

I read the original post just fine. I read that the customer never plays slants. I also read that you were asking our opinions. :) Mine are: 1. It's a cool-looking guitar in a Picasso sort of way. 2. It would be OK for the one guitarist you mentioned, but who else wants a steel guitar that you can't...

I can't find it on YouTube. I read about the clip in a post on this forum a couple months ago. In any case, the brief camera shot of the steel guitarist showed where he was playing up the fretboard, and that was all I needed to figure out the chords.

It seems like it would just make playing slants harder. For instance, a reverse slant near the nut, or a forward slant above the 12th fret would be very difficuly. And I don't see any real advantage to the setup.

Yeah! That's one of the best parts of the song. I saw the steel guitarist for a couple seconds on a YouTube video, right when he was playing that phrase. It helped to know that it was they were intervals from a B7 chord (playing the song in Em). Here's the four bars that contain that lick: [tab] C E...

I started out in December with my first lap steel--a 6-string in C6 tuning. By April I bought an 8-string--also C6. I'd say get a 6- or 8-string. If you play a lot, your going to want a better guitar (better tone) and likely 8-strings before too long. I just got a GeorgeBoard, and the tone is TO DIE...

A question about pickups for Georgeboard players

I'm buying my first high-quality steel guitar--a Georgeboard. Has anyone experimented with different pickups, for instance, a horseshoe pickup rather than the George L that it comes with? I'll be selling my Chandler RH-2 because I decided I needed 8 strings. I was playing open G (GBDGBD low-to-high)...
