Jupiter 15" speaker?

Just curious whether anyone around these parts has tried the Jupiter Condenser 15LC speaker? I see his other speakers get rave reviews and was thinking of trying this with a tweed (5e5a) pro-style amp for lap steel and telecaster.

Thanks for any info!

Ken, this looks awesome. Can you comment on the difference (sound-wise) between the 225 and 716 series caps?

One comment on Victorias (I think this is true - I haven't looked inside one to verify)- even though those look like standard orange drop caps (e.g. 716P's), I think they're not. According to their website, those are custom made caps that are not polypropylene film. http://www.victoriaamp.com/whats_...

Kekoa, I used 1.5" from bridge to pickup centerline. I believe that's the magic number proposed by some very knowledgeable people here on the forum. I didn't do any experimenting for this guitar, but on a previous build I tried out different positions and found 1.5" to be about right for t...

Thanks Roman and Jonathan. I did build it. It's mahogany, with a body style copied off of a Rickenbacker B6. I need to take some better photos of it without all the glare. I think the combination of the mahogany with the CC pickup gives some real nice fat, smooth tones - the highs are really great w...

I've got a CC lap steel pickup from Vintage Vibe. It has a really big, fat clean sound - I think it's quite different from the Valco style pickups. It might be what you're looking for. I can send you a clip of it if you're interested.

thanks for the responses. it does seem like it could be something mechanical, hitting a resonant vibration frequency or something. what's the "chopstick test"? i went back and studied it a little more, and noted a few more things: - it doesn't happen until the amp has warmed up (1-2min) - ...

Deluxe Reverb mystery noise??

I've got a Deluxe Reverb reissue that's producing a peculiar noise, and wonder if any of the knowledgeable folks here would have ideas as to what's going on. It seems to produce a relatively quiet but audible "whooshing" noise just after striking a note, sort of like the sound of a blowing...

I was trying to tame some of the brightness and harshness of my reissue Deluxe Reverb (even after new tubes and clipping the bright cap), and recently put in an Eminence Cannabis Rex. I'm really liking it - highs are still there, but much smoother. I'd read elsewhere (and agree) that it's a good mat...

With the CC lap steel pickup you can also change the bar magnets. I have the alnico V in it now, but Pete sent me alnico III and ceramic magnets (haven't tried them yet).

Thanks Mark. I haven't had a chance to do a lot of playing w/overdrive yet, but so far I really like the overdriven sound - I'd say it has sort of a smoother, "glassy" sound when driven, as opposed to maybe a bit more grind from a P90, if that makes any sense. My string spacing is 2" ...

I put a P10R in my Pro Jr for lap steel, and it (along with a complete tube swap) made a world of difference. Took away all of the muddy-ness. Based on others' reviews, I'm sure there are probably better alnico speakers (Weber, etc), and it's not a high power speaker, but it was a big improvement ov...

boss rv-5

I have a Boss RV-5, excellent (near mint) condition, with box, manual. ~2yrs old. Works great, sounds great, quiet, stereo, nice reverbs. Only selling so I can afford another amp.

$100 shipped to lower 48. Can post or send photos if interested.

Hi Fred, As the owner of a Fender Pro Jr that also had a hiss and a hum, I'd second the tube swapping idea. I had to try several different tube types/brands to find some that worked well in my amp (although they worked perfectly fine in other amps). I ended up switching to a lower gain 5751 tube(a P...

re: supro/valco pickups

I'm thinking about building myself another 6-string lap steel (I previously built a 6-string that has a Fender Champion-style pickup). Although I'm still new to the steel guitar and just learning about these things, I think the sound I want is like the old Supro/Valco-style string-through pickups. I...

re: reverb

I found was that the amount of noise (hiss) was really dependent upon which amplifier was being used. Looking through some of the reviews here and on other sites, reports of noise problems seem to occur frequently when used with Fender Blues Jr and Pro Jr amps. With the Boss RV-5, there was absolute...

Rich,
I think you are correct. The SD is modeled on the Champion, not Champ, and it mounts by just screwing into the wood w/two holes on one side. Sorry for the confusion. I can send you some pics if you want, but I don't think this is what you're looking for.

I'm relatively new to the lapsteel and steel pickups myself, but recently I built my own lapsteel using one of Seymour Duncan's "Antiquity" '50s lapsteel pickups, which I believe is modeled after the '50s Champ pickups. So you may want to look into these. See this link: http://www.seymourd...
