I call that tuning Leon E13... Mr McAuliffe's tuning on a lot of the stuff he did. The Boggs E13 has the 5 in the lower course and no 5 in the upper... I prefer the Leon for the way the dyads lie, and for the 'home' feeling on the upper course (more 6-like). Most folks use it as a strum tuning only....

My Remington d8 was really dead sounding at first. I had to tighten nearly every screw nut and bolt on it and then it sang light it was supposed to! I still remember how bummed I was when I first set it up. I'm wondering if the "dud" you had might have had something similar going on. They...

Most lap steelers put the pedal way out front so that the knee angle doesn't change when the pedal changes. This means that you probably don't want a low-profile pedal like a Goodrich etc... but YMMV.

I prefer a stand myself.

Has the kidney-bean tuners, pre-hex... so probably late '60s... with the poly finish. I have its brother in blonde. There might be writing on the pickup for the date, but that really doesn't affect the value much. Nice looking specimen.

If you can plug it into your tube tester with the same socket/settings and get readings for both A and B sides then it is probably safe to plug it into your amp... there appear to be no shorts.

6th's sound bad when used in some settings... like bluegrass, or rock. If you like low-bass D then you can always just extend it. You can put a 3rd in the bass course... then put a 3rd above the first string... or you could put a 3rd and 5th above the first string. That A would be getting pretty tig...

I presume you're paralleling the speaker connections... on the 4 ohm setting you'll be getting pretty close, about 3 ohms. Just plug them both in and set it to 4.

Mike, do you think they'd work well recording from the back of say a 500 seat theater to the stage? I've only seen them in close-up applications. Rich, the SM uses a funky ground system that depends on wires stapled to the wood. The chrome panel then is screwed down onto the staple, making the connection. I've tried bypassing this and soldering ground wires but it hums more... pretty crazy how that works. What I've done is to lift the staple ...

Yet it is how we measure them when comparing them.

Sometime during that era, some Stringmasters didn't come with bridge covers. The bridges were different. The ends of the bridges, with covers, were pointed. It looks like, on this guitar, that the ends are pretty much rounded and you couldn't fasten the covers on this type of bridge. Erv, looking a...

When you put benders on guitars you are looking at the quality of the remaining pieces... if your bender depends on the old bridge, the cheap bridge will not work well... needs to be at least rounded (like a Stringmaster etc)... All of the pedal resos I've played suffered from drop... can't call it 'cabinet drop' so I'll call it 'cone drop'. A true '68 TR is going to have cloth wiring (desirable) and drip-edge grille. It's going to also be closer to the blackface circuit with some cathode circuit modifications that are easy to undo. That said it would appeal more to an armpit guitarist in that it's not as high-power clean as the later T...

There's no way to date it exactly, but both the pots are from '56 so that gives an earliest bracket. The pickup is essentially a Strat pickup with the poles shoved down under the cover.
