Mr Besic:

I have a Carson Wells double neck 4x8 guitar I would consider trading for your banjo. It has blue formica and engraved metal parts. The mechanism underneath is very solid. It would come with a Hilton Pedal. I would consider a trade.

Instead of hoping you get a fiddle with "the sound", I suggest you check out the fiddles revoiced by Royce Burt in Plant City, Florida. You can see what he has for sale by going to Youtube and entering his name. He takes older turn-of-the-century factory violins and revoices them to Italia...

Just a comment about the upcoming Portland Steel Jam: Lap steels have always been welcome. I have heard several lap steel players every time I have attended, in fact they frequently "steel the show". There must have been a misunderstanding when Larry said he would always have lap steels at...

I mostly play the fiddle in a band and frequently get requests for Orange Blossom Special. The banjo player gets request for Foggy Mountain Breakdown. These tunes may be overdone from a musicians point of view but for the audience they are still exciting. If SGR is so offensive to you then you alway...

Here is my observation and I hope I don't offend anyone. Being a fairly new PSG player I have attended two conventions. Being surrounded by so many good players makes it intimidating to go to a hospitality room or manufacturers room and play anything. I can imagine someone who is interested but does...

Phrasing

Larry is exactly right. Good phrasing separates the mechanical execution of notes from art. Larry was just trying to be helpful as usual and share his knowledge and experience. If someone doesn't agree then don't play that way. Some folks must feel that if the information doesn't come from them then...

Perfectionism Gone Wild

Dear Ray: Do doubt about it, the better an instrument is played and the more in tune it is the better it sounds. Unfortunately you seem to be having difficulty separating professional playing (doing it for a living and getting paid to be perfect), and a casual jam among folks that do other things fo...

You could always call Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, TN.
They are experts on vintage instruments. I don't recognize the brand myself.

Herby: I guess you'd have to ask Ralph Stanley to get it from the source, but I heard that back in the day the Stanley Brothers were told to drop the fiddle and use lead guitar so they would not sound so country. This attitude has been around for a long time and it's a shame. It seems like anything ...

Leo: I have been told by a very good steel player that the size of the bar does matter. He said the larger bars are cleaner but brighter. The 7/8 bar was used by Buddy Emmons to get a "dirtier sound", not for ease of play. He also recommends BJS bars. I split the difference and play with a...

Price of Pedal Steel Guitars

I doubt that the pedal steel makers are motivated by greed. My perception is that they make these steels because they love the instrument. Turning a profit is healthy and a natural part of commerce. The wages you earn at your job are a profit to you. Pedal steels are a specialty item and not found ...

Ray: I have played bluegrass fiddle for over 40 years and am doing just the opposite to you, I am taking up the pedal steel late in life. Careful at the violin shops.
