The intro, first half of the solo, and a lot of the fills have to be the late, great Buck Trent on his Shot Jackson modified electric banjo with benders. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG3Zvj63pK4 I wouldn't swear to it, but the steel sure has a lot of hints of Buddy Charlton's playing; the lick th...

Every beer was $14.

"Roberts Western World" has several beers for $2.50(!), and nothing over $7.50.

And it's by far the most consistently good bar downtown for real country music.

A different perspective: I think it's misleading to suggest that a Saturday night in the drunken, touristy bachelorette part of downtown is representative in any way of the "Nashville music scene today." There's great, creative, music being played here every night of the week, in pretty mu...

Lloyd Green recorded several albums with Peter Cooper that I think might be up your alley. Lloyd's pedal steel is not the only instrument, but the arrangements are mostly pretty sparse and his steel is by far the predominant instrument on most tracks. Here's a pretty detailed post I wrote last year ...

If you're talking about the duet album Merle and George did with Billy Sherrill in the early '80s, I'm pretty sure it's Weldon Myrick.

Johnny Cox with the Billy Mata band

I had the great pleasure of listening to and hanging out with Johnny last week when he played the Broken Spoke in Austin with Billy Mata (a perfect place to see them). It just doesn't get any better; a great 7-piece band, western-swing with some shuffles and waltzes mixed in. Johnny was absolutely k...

I so hated to get the phone call the day Dave passed. A musician's musician, and a good friend for many, many years. We were roommates on a Vince Gill tour in 1989 (just before Vince hired John Hughey) and never lost touch and still played occasional gigs and sessions. He was so versatile and an imp...

Hi Johnny,

Will you be playing with Billy in Austin at the Broken Spoke this weekend (Friday, Sept 15?)? I'll be in town and would love to see and hear ya.

I rarely missed a Monday night at the Station Inn in the early days of the Timejumpers!

Hey Jim, thanks for the inside scoop on the Emmons/NRBQ match-up.

Makes perfect sense; gotta love unusual or unlikely collaborations like that when they work out so well.

To bring this back to the tracks with Buddy Emmons: I wonder whose call it was to bring Buddy in? Presumably either Joey, or bandmate Terry Adams, since they produced it and maybe Skeeter suggested him. And it looks like the album was mostly cut in Woodstock, New York which makes me wonder if they b...

In the 90s, Skeeter and Joey would be backstage at the Opry. Around that time, I saw NRBQ played Nashville. All that talk about them being a great live band: every bit of that was true. Thanks for all that info above, Robert. I worked quite a bit on the Opry back then (though probably not as much a...

On careful listening, it also sounds like a tenor banjo playing rhythm, or if not, a muted guitar doing a "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" part. I'm unaware of that ever being a thing in Nashville.?? Hi Joe, Harold Bradley played what I believe was a tenor (4-string) banjo with a...

That would have been Tommy Hannum, most likely, played steel for most of Ricky's career, starting in the late '80s. For most of that he was the bandleader as well.

Here's another thread about Tommy, and more recent gigs.

I agree with Kenny; I'd guess it's Hal Rugg. There's a few places where his touch and tone are hard to mistake.
It doesn't sound like Lloyd Green to me.

I don't know the tuning, or what strings he pulled, but I'm pretty sure he had an eight-string dobro at some point.
