I met Ralph when he was with Waylon in Stockholm, Sweden 1983 and got to try his guitar at the soundcheck. The front neck was a G based tuning for sure. No pedals hooked up to it from what I recall. It was a great concert by the way and so was Ralphs playing. What a nice humble man he was. Rest in p...

So sad news! Mr. Emmons' playing was the main reason I started playing steel back in 1980. I'll always cherish the memory visiting the ISGC in 1984 seeing Buddy perform live! What great times it was. Thank you for all the fantastic music! You will be greatly missed by so many! Rest in peace Maestro!

The albums Weldon did with Wanda Jackson on the Myrrh label in mid 70s are among my favorites! Just fantastic tasteful steel playing. Also all the great Moe Bandy and Connie Smith albums. What a legend! So sad to hear he passed! Rest in peace Maestro!

I played there in 2001 with Kentucky based artist Mike Bella with whom I toured for 8 summer seasons. It's a great festival and a huge one. The year we played there they had close to 20.000 visitors. I have played several other festivals in France also but this one was the largest. Also the Lyon are...

Donna, I was there in 1984 and I remember you from the Jeff Newman seminar held at the convention. As I remember, some guy sitting next to me in Jeff's class, told me that you had just been starting playing steel by then, right? I remember you had a double neck Franklin? It was a great convention th...

Donna, this must be 1983 because "Moon" was there and this was the year he was inducted in the Hall of Fame. Waylon and Jessie were also present to pay tribute to Ralph. I met Ralph in Stockholm, Sweden later the same year while on tour with Waylon.

Zane, I believe the players in the 3rd row, from left 4 & 5, are Dave Hayward (in Blue T-shirt) and Gerry Hogan (in Baseball Cap) from England.

Here's what I would chose if I only had 3 levers on C6: 1. 3 string C -> C# 2. 5 string G -> F & 10 string C -> D 3. 4 string A -> A# & 3 string C -> D (Hughey change I use all the time) Most people would of course lower 3 string C -> B first choice but as I see it, and for my needs it isn't...

John: Amen to that! When were a majority of all the classic great steel lines created? Most likely on the spot when the player didn't really know what he was doing at first! Of course all improvising calls for a basic understanding of how music and harmony works in general but even without any knowl...

This may be controversial but when I look back at my 30 years of steel playing (almost) I can now see that when I learned most about the instrument was at times when I was forced to create something on the spot without preparation, live or on a session. Preasure can often make you lift mountains so ...

Walter: I don't know when this lick was first used but as I have heared it was Hal Rugg who came up with something similar either when he was recording with Loretta, Wilburns or Osborne Brothers. I would guess Weldon was influenced by Hal's playing when he joined him as a staff steel player on the O...

One of my favorite Myrick intros ever! I tabbed this intro along with some other Myrick licks for Scotty's newsletter over 20 years ago. Here's the start of it. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix0912/878_2_3.jpg Roger: Both Hal & Weldon tuned 2nd string to C# and raised it to D and D# with t...
