'Relaxing' for E13

Here is my take on Jerry Gleason's arrangement, which is in turn based on Hank Garland's track on 'Jazz Winds from a New Direction'. Jerry says, "Close, but unfortunately, no cigar", adding that he plays certain licks in different positions. On a Clinesmith Koa 8 resonator https://www.yout...

Here are a couple of picking exercises using major pentatonics that I just found in my files. Fairly topical given Paulo's current post.

I found Stephen's video most helpful in getting started with E13. I am slowly working it up with arrangements and transcriptions. There are many rich chord voicings. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in discussions of this tuning is that it is a 'pentatonic machine', which makes it very useful...

The Steel Guitar and Its Problematic Future by Bruce Clarke

I saved this article from Bruce Clarke's (1/12/1925-24/07/2008) website and have been searching the Net to see if it was still available anywhere, without success. Bruce was an influential Australian steel guitarist whose legacy includes the Cumquat Records series of Hawaiian recording restorations....

Thank you, Sam and Tim.

Tim, I have no commerce in mind but I will post more bits and pieces here. Facebook groups are handy but generally, it is terrible so I won't be posting any more tabs there. Eventually, I'll get a website together.

Thank you, Andy, Nic, Joe and Ethan! Nic, I am very fortunate to have a good friend who can play so well and has patience. It was actually he who, in about 1985, put a copy of Will's 'For The Last Time' in my hands and said "Have a listen to this." I'd never heard anything like it. I also ...

'Dolphin Dance' for A6

This is a tune that I have loved for a long time. I don't think this arrangement is particularly difficult to play. No reverse slants. Some of the melody notes were a bit of a challenge to harmonise, such as the minor 11ths and the b5 on a dominant chord. It is in the original key so it can be playe...

Larry, I had a look but couldn't find a tab. I was playing it a while back on E13 but after a closer listen, I think I was up the wrong path and that A6 was what Billy Bowman used. The moving line could be played on various strings but the bottom notes of chords in the last bars of the A section (8 ...

Some more Bach

This is the famous prelude BWV 846. It's the first piece in his 24 Preludes and Fugues for Piano and the most basic, but it is not without twists. I have transposed it from C to G for A6, which would put it in Bb for C6 high G. I have tried to allow as many notes as possible to sustain as a piano co...

Excellent transfers. Thank you, Chris. The date of 1934 for Muliwai Hula may be incorrect as Rockwell's discography has it listed as 1938. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2203/7720_Screenshot_20231005_at_80228_PM_1.jpg https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2203/7720_Screenshot_20231005_at_80...

I like Sebastian

A shout-out to Sebastian Muller for his wonderful version of Sol's 'I Like You". It is impeccably played, as you would expect, but he really captures Sol's vibe and humor. There is a smile in every line!

Larry, I can't help with your first grip, a major 7th chord. But the second one, a minor seventh, can be found on A6 as strings 8, 5 & 3. Might be worthwhile checking out A6 which has the same configuration as your C6, high G.

My understanding (from the album notes) is that this recording was made around 1950, but that these guys were playing this style together in the 1920s, with many similar groups at the time but no recordings. So these recordings are like a musical fossil record of a lost tradition.

Whoops! Rookie file handling error. Thanks, Jim! I run multiple tunings on my app to test things. I'll leave the A6 version of the first chorus here to show the difficulty. Maybe some neck hopping is in order. My E13 tuning is Leon's, but with the 7th string tuned up to the 5th of the chord, a varia...

Robben Ford’s “Cannonball Shuffle“ solo

This is one of my favorite Robben Ford solos from his 2003 tribute to Freddie King (with ‘The Stumble” in mind, I would think). It’s well worthy of study for any instrument but has particular relevance for steel, IMO. Robben’s elixir of arpeggios, blues, and Mixolydian tonalities is great and contai...

Not digging deep and remembering that he had 4 necks to draw on, but the harmonics at 1.46 indicate the top 5 notes of A6 with the bar at the 7th fret.
