LKR is interesting , as , to my knowledge , virtually all steel players , Paul Franklin aside , have that change on RKR . ie lowering the 2nd string to D and then to C# . I have thought of doing that too , as there would be some mechanical advantage using the left knee , as you would effectively hav...

Can't offer any advice one way or the other , you seem to have an idea of where you want to go . I started with six strings , went to seven , then eight, and ended up with a D10 pedal steel within the space of six months. Good luck. Jerry

Hi Matt
Just curious , since you are new to the instrument , why you are looking for a 10 string lapsteel . Which part of Ontario are you from ? I am in London .

Sounds like a great idea. I warm up every day , 20 minutes os so , without touching the pedals . You could also tune your E's down to D# and practice the B6 side of the tuning . Lots there . Jerry

Hi Joseph
Yep , sure sounds like your pickup coil is open , and needs to be rewound . This is not uncommon , has happened to me a few times . Jerry ( not the Jerry that rewinds pickups )

Bottom six of the E9 for me . I warm up every day on those strings , playing scales , 2 octave whole tone C scale , C major and all the associated modes , C diminished . Major chords , minor chords , 7th chords , 9th chords too . Lots to practice the left and right hands there . No pedals needed for...

I had an early 80's SD10 PP , came with those black LeGrande style pedals. Have seen lots of pics of 80's PP's that had the LeGrande pedals. The early LeGrande pedals were black , later ones were silver . I am far from an expert though .

Well you are going to have to get those coils rewound if they read open . They are not going to sound anything like they are supposed to until that has been done . For me that would be the first step .

Hi Joe
On my Stringmaster the bolts that hold the necks together had loosened a bit , I removed the diamonds on the back of the guitar , and tightened them up with an allen key . Got rid of the flex . Could help in your case .

Myself and many , many others lower the E's with RKL , and raise the E's with LKL . If you are comfortable with your set up , go with it . Jerry

Hi Ted
Sounds to me like you have a pretty good musical foundation , some good resources , and the time so the rest is putting in the effort .
Get comfortable with the bar and finger picks and start learning tunes.

I have owned a few Stringmasters , 22.5 and 24.25 scales , from the 50's . The longer scale guitars are livelier and ring out more than the shorter scale guitars.

You could get some tab for some Buddy Emmons' intros , fills and solos , and this would give you insight into how these strings are used . The early Ray Price stuff with Buddy Emmons would demonstrate the use of these strings . Good luck .

I am probably the low man on the totem pole here , but I use that low D when in B6 mode , ie with the 8th string lowered. I use the strings 9, 6 and 5 to get the E7 , so I have a 4 chord at the same fret as the 1 chord , strings 8 , 6 and 5 . I can play a bunch of stuff with just that E lower lever ...

Perhaps you unintentionally shortened the amount of travel the knee lever has when you adjusted the position of the lever . Was it working properly before you made the change ?
