Your target buyer for this is probably someone who is local so they can try it, who is familiar with fixing and maintaining pedal steels, who probably has a bunch of other ones, and who wants another for local gigs where he wouldn't want to take a nice steel. I recently sold a Rayline, which is a le...

Thanks Cody & Jim, I really appreciate the feedback! I agree these pedals seem to do a lot per note you play. After your videos, Cody, I think for myself I'd have a pretty narrow use case for these, but ones I'd really like. I mean that I'd have to carefully marry the pedal settings to what I wa...

Thanks Tal & Rick, this is the exact kind of info I was hoping for! It seems to me that volume swells go very well with these types of pedals, but I don't love the sound of sliding with them. It seems like there's all kinds of cool sound design, drone, and ambient options they give you, but ther...

This steel would be very useful as a shared instrument. You could leave it set up at church and each player that uses it could have their copedent saved, for instance.

Thanks Tal I appreciate it, Cali 76 is one I've really wanted to try. I have never heard of effectrode but that LA-1A looks great.

And I agree I think when I like compressor pedals its when they're giving that pushed amp feel.

Weird, Modern, Boutique Pedals

I don't like traditional guitar pedal effects, except for delay, reverb, and compression. This means that I don't really look around at pedals much. However recently I have noticed that some companies like Chase Bliss and Hologram have been coming out with pedals that apply algorithms to long buffer...

Yes Empress has at least 3 or 4 pedals, and like you say they have scratch and dent. I tried their reverb and loved it. It's just old and I wonder if they're coming out with a new one soon. They've also been very helpful when I had questions about their 2 different compressors. The sidechain idea is...

Thanks Dave I appreciate the feedback, as the Empress is probably the first one I'd buy. Not crazy expensive and made in Canada which is nice. I agree about it being hard to know exactly why you like a compressor. A compression pedal could have EQ, or increase sustain, or kill the spikes, or do a bu...

Thanks Dave that's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to hear about! I'll ad the Alesis to the list. Incidentally here is the list of other compressors I've been considering, although I have yet to see them in person: Origin Effects Cali 76 Stacked (two 1176 compressors in a pedal) Empress Bass ...

Compressor for Steel

I have been playing around with compressors for years, and until recently I really disliked them, always preferring as pure a signal path as possible. Basically it was always some version of the MXR Dynacomp where the compression was heavy handed or tone sucking in some way. However recently I've be...

Oh right I see what you mean. The Ox Box is kind of a competitor to the Fryette Power Station in the sense that both let you play your amps cranked at low volumes, and have lots of I/O options for whatever is needed. The Fryette can be used as a power amp as well, but doesn't have all the IR and eff...

For recording direct or sending a line to front of house you might want to consider the universal audio ox box. If you already have a good amp or two it’s hard to beat. Thank you for confirmation of this, I did see its release a few weeks ago. It will be first on the list if XLR direct from the pre...

That's a good solution too, I just already have a cab I really like. That would be a very compact gear set though: preamp, reverb pedal and cab! I'll keep an eye out for a Furlong for sure.

Wow thanks for all the replies! I think for all the options it provides I'll start with the Power Station. It has the effects loop, attenuation, and xlr and 1/4" outs for recording and FoH. Thank you for these other options I'll put them on the list! It would be great to have a preamp and light...

I agree with Stew. Initially I had a Carter Starter and within 2 weeks I was looking to sell it and upgrade to a pro steel, which I did. I would only buy a student model if you're not sure if you want to play pedal steel or if money is a big issue. Basically you're trying the instrument out if you b...

Hey Dan, sounds good!

So for DAW, it would go:

preamp -> interface -> DAW with Cab Sim / IR plugins

How would it go for Front of House? I guess preamp into something like Torpedo X into the mixing board?

OK cool good suggestions. I've read somewhere that dedicated power amps sound a bit better than the power station, but I guess those wouldn't have all the other stuff like effects loops, attenuation, XLR outs, etc. I guess if you go with a Fryette 2/90/2 or something you're basically just buying a t...

Tube Preamps into DAW or FOH?

I'm thinking of getting a tube preamp. Does anyone have experience running these straight into your DAW or the front of house? I guess you'd need some type of cab simulator too, right? I'm new to preamps I'm not sure how it all works.

Power Amp for Pedal Steel

I've been looking at getting Brad Sarno's Revelation Preamp. Does anyone have good suggestions for which power amp to use with it? Does it matter?
