Sad news, Herb. I used to drive Neil home to Mom Upchurch's from the Den sometimes (because he didn't drive). We'd go up to his room and drink a beer and listen to Buddy and talk steel guitar. I got my start on steel guitar from his Sho~Bud instruction album. Great guy. Quote: "The C6th neck is...

Sorry, your email never arrived, it seems. Maybe something from the Clearance page will work, since it'll be a while before she can get to new orders.

Joe Goldmark "Blue Steel"

Joe Goldmark was kind enough to send me a copy of his latest CD, Blue Steel, recently, and it’s mighty fine listening, especially Look What Thoughts Will Do and Beautician Blues. Check it out at http://joegoldmark.com/

Can one make a living on lower Broadway? The only ones I know that play lower Broadway are young guys trying to be heard and make connections. Or older seasoned players that are just trying to keep their chops up? I've heard the pay stinks. bb I kept track of my pay on Broadway for a couple years a...

Price did "A Way To Survive" in C on the original record that we all know and love, but he's been doing it in A more recently. Maybe not convenient for the steel player, but Mike Cass doesn't have a problem making it sound good, and I doubt they've had any complaints. Loretta did "Don...

If you don't have D backed up you might ought to do that on an external hard drive. But then you've got the possibility of backing up the virus with it, but that's better than no backup.

I have pre-composed a couple solos. The first 8 bars of "I've Got Rhythm" fits in "Workin' Man Blues" and the first 6 bars of the Simpson's theme song works in "Emit A Slut". :whoa: Whoops, having a dyslectic attack. "Tulsa Time".

How many chick singers does it take to sing "Crazy"?
All of them.

This thread brings back fond memories of backing up Roni Stoneman, where everything was in G.

I heard a story about Buddy on a session, and I know this ain't the first time this happened. The producer had him make several passes at his solo, and every one was perfect, different and a keeper.

I got a gig one time because the previous steel guitar player insulted the artist's cajones by complaining that he did songs in chick keys, like F# and B.

Ray, what was funny, at least to me, about the Midnight Jamboree gig was that I knew the songs better than Buddy did because I’d been trying to copy his licks as best I could from Darrell’s album ever since it came out, and Buddy, despite his well known friendship with Darrell, apparently didnâ€...

Heh, when you're playing sessions you might only play a song, or just your part in a song, a couple times in the studio and then never again, unless you're working with the artist on a regular basis or just happen to play with him some time in the future, maybe months or years after the fact.

I don't have anything on hand as relevant to my previous post as I'd like, but this is real close, and should palliate all you steel guitar crazies. Buddy doesn't seem to need a chart for this number. A Way To Survive

The Gigantic E was backing up Darrell McCall at the Midnight Jamboree, and not only did he not know the steel parts - on songs he'd where he'd been on the session - he didn't even know the changes, and had to have charts. So I use that as a reference point on some of my gigs. If you're with a...
