I've done this with my Marlen. I had a couple of original Marlen card stock fretboards and I had a friend of mine who is a drafting designer scan them and make a digital template. So I can alway print a stock looking board. Then we removed graphics except the fret lines. I can drop any design I want...

Probably like a Marlen pull release. Tune the raises with pedals down at the keyhead. Let off the pedal and tune with the screw behind the changer. Tune strings that lower with the keyhead first, engage the lower lever and tune at the screw behind the changer. With strings that both raise and lower ...

I had this one months ago. Built by Ralph Pierce in Indiana. If this is the same that just sold on Reverb recently, It used to be mine 6 months ago. I got it from someone who rebuilt the mechanics. I worked hard to adjust them and got it playing well in a G tuning with a very odd copedent. I sold it...

I would think a lot of people just like a good resto project and enjoy the work, are good at it, and get satisfaction of the final results. The performance would be better most likely. Personally, I don't care for totally restored steels.. or cars for that matter. I prefer decent condition instrumen...

That's what I do with my Marlen. I love it tuned down to D. I didn't set mine up at E9 to begin with so I am not sure what adjustments you'll have to address. I wouldn't think you's need to change gauges? Mostly like changer positions and I am not sure about the others. Big fat round low end at D wh...

Does a larger bar dampen low end?
I have been playing with this large Dunlop 921 for awhile. I always thought it sounded fine. I then started using the old Marlen bar that came with my guitar which is smaller. I have no idea of it's actual size. Boy the low end with that sounds amazing. Overall the bar sound just a tad brighter. Sus...

Should this Moyo volume pedal be killing my high end?
Perhaps this is just how it is. I can't say it sounds bad as I like a softer high end but compared to the steel direct into the amp, the high end is severely cut. Is this normal for the Moyo pedal. I'm using a George L 10-1

That's a Pierce 8 string pedal steel from the late 60's. made in Winchester Indiana I have had one and it had a lighter duty build, good tone and a rebuilt changer, The original changer is pretty primitive.. It is not from 1949. Look at he Reverb auction link to see photo of the original changer sty...

George L's 10-1 on a Marlen Pull Release
I am soon to find out but am just curious as what to expect from a GL 10-1 pickup on my old Marlen. I will say I am fond of the original pickup in many ways but it seems to miss a bit of low end. It has nice midrange and highs are a bit bright. . . It has a coil tap which sounds a bit acoustic and i...

I wouldn't remove the whole piece either. I would use a business card like a putty knife and load it with Tightbond and paint it down into the opening and get as much coverage as possible Don't over glue, just cover the surface well. . Press it closed and clamp it with a piece of wood across the glu...

David, That absolutely bums me out. UPS lost a beautiful Wurlitzer tube 145B electric piano I sold several years ago. Then didn't honor the claim. The buyer was kind enough to split the loss. They really could care less and I have not used them since. On a happier note, Smartpost lost a vintage Fire...

Thanks Richard. That's what I was intending to do but I was able to get the pickup off the plate, which wasn't easy, They screw in from the bottom side of the plate and only one is accessible. I then was able to keep the original plate, reinsert the height adjustment 3 springs, and use velcro to att...

Pickup Swap in Marlen, I have to tear this down..Really?
I am interested in trying some different PU in my Marlen. So....I have to remove the changer and rods etc just to do this?. Good lord. I tried removing the stock pickup and took out the 3 height adjusting screws then found out it is mounted to a plexi plate larger than the pickup cut out on the chan...

The year is 1976 (serial # read backwards) and Marlens are no longer in business. Mine is a 1968 so I don't have the window with the nylon tuners. So my knowledge, as limited as it is, will be a bit different. Since yours has the nylons and access, I think it may be easier to sort out? Yes the finge...

Hello, what year is your Marlen. Does it have the opening access on the end plate with nylon tuner or is does it just have the row of top screws for tuning? Is your lower lever stop not allowing it to go any lower? Also how many rods are going into your 4th string finger. Some time the other rod(s) ...

Is this really an old MSA?
I stumbled across this from an old Reverb sale and it was advertised as an early MSA. The only thing that said MSA was the pedal cross bar. It uses cable rather than rods. Anyone know what this is? https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix1712/18755_Screen_Shot_20190729_at_93702_PM_2.jpg https://bb.st...

IDK, I had this wonderful little 8 string 4 pedal all raise Pierce that was tricky to tune but sounded quite good. I took off the 4th pedal, The end tuning screws moved with the pull so it tuned opposite than a pull/release. The legs were a bit lighter duty but not really card table like, at least o...

I am looking at this Capri and am curious if anyone has any info on this.
