Charlie Christian

I just was reading the discussion about Django, and I thought people might be interested in checking out two truly great Charlie Christian websites. The amount of effort that has gone into these websites is awesome, the transcriptions are incredible, and they are a great place to learn most importan...

Django's playing in the late 40's early 50's was as good if not better than it was in the 30's. I think his American experience was just culturally abnormal for him, kinda like when he tried to play electric guitar it did not suit him at all, not the same fluidity or confidence. My point being when ...

The title song of Merle's new record is a Blaze Foley composition if I'm not mistaken. That guy had a tragic ending. He was murdered around 10 years ago after protecting an old man he knew from a beating, supposedly fending the attacker (who was the old man's son) off with a broomstick. The son came...

I've always liked country music but this is what got me hooked. About 7 years ago I was listening to plenty of Bob Dylan, then when I heard Hank Williams after hearing Bob Dylan it all began to make a lot more sense. I understood the debt Bob and many other songwriters owed him. I suppose when you a...

A fellow called Kent Armstrong in Wales makes great Strat pickups, they are reasonably priced too. I believe he has a website but I couldn't find it when I searched, but there are plenty of favourable reviews online. He is a real quick shipper too. From my experience Seymour Duncans and Di Marzio's ...

He didn't just get his name from his father, but the name of his band too. I don't see why he had to say anything of that nature except maybe because his bands profile has decreased considerably. It does sound derogatory to his fathers fans. I think it's great credit to Bob that his kids only get on...

Anytime a UK music magazine does a 100 greatest albums of all time poll which is quite a regular occurrence, the only country record usually to make it, somewhere in the lower reaches is 'Grevious Angel'. Quite ironic since it would never make an all time country 100.

Didn't Merle Haggard also have White Line Fever? I loved the trucker road movies from the 70's too, you had Jerry Reed in Smokey and the Bandit, Kris Kristofferson in Convoy, I bet there were lots of others, anyone remember?

Over this side of the world it is a lot worse. This may be a slight diversion on the point being made, but as well as DJ's getting the most work here we have a lot of bands who play along to backing tracks and their philosophy is not just to play everything note for note, but to also sound exactly l...

I agree with what Kevin is saying, My read of the situation is that for whatever reason you like character and individuality have been forsaken in country music for safe marketable product. My ears or eyes cannot differientiate between most new country acts, I think if you had a identity line up for...

Townes Van Zandt's White Freightliner Blues mentions New Mexico in one of the verses. Goes something like 'New Mexico ain't bad girl, the people there treat you kind'.... Though I think it would be more of a challenge to find a song with New Mexico in the title.

In Ireland there is a singer who has been around since the 60's called Art Supple, his trademark is doing a song from each of Ireland's 32 counties in a row.

I'm not so sure about this. Seems to me it is the same as somebody drawing glasses and a moustache on the Mona Lisa. I suppose if somebody gets a buzz out of that kind of thing good for them. If you mean the 43 Greatest Hits Bill, I got an exchange for it after listening only to about 5 songs. That record reeks of going through the motions, the sound isn't nearly as natura...

I'm waiting for the first real baroque influenced country guitar player, you know maybe he could merge the Brandenburg Concerto's with Wildwood Flower played full blast through a Marshall Stack while out on a surfboard with cowhorns on it or something.
