Thanks for the link b0b. I just received my advance order CD of Merle's "If I Could Only Fly" album. It is a 'must have' for Hag fans. He uses his own musicians (The Strangers) and the album is GREAT. Norm does a fantastic job as usual. Get it - you'll be glad you did. ![](http://www.b0b.com/forum/wink.gif) [This message was edited by Dave Smith on 17 October 2000 at 09:58 AM.] |

Hag's comment on the internet being the last bastion of freedom due to non government interference is pretty thought provoking.
Watch out for the government weasling their way into the internet with taxes and censure. A few years ago there was a push by the gov to have the internet in every high school in America. Some areas of the country have a tax added to your local phone bill to fund this. I guarantee you that some time in the very near future there will be gov censure of some internet material in the guise of "protecting the children". Hag is right. The cool thing about the internet is the freedom. Thoughts, ideas, communication, unobstructed/uncensured. Nice to see an "old dog" learning/expressing some new tricks. GO HAG!

Thanks a lot! That had gotten by me… I’ve been wanting to hear a recording of that title tune since I saw him do it about 4 years ago, at least.
There’s just something about Merle’s political perspective that appeals to me. It sounds like he “trusts the people more than the government”.
Last night, my wife bought me the latest Sara Evans CD. I haven’t had a chance to listen yet, as she also bought me a new Merle Haggard CD. It’s gospel with Albert E. Brumley Jr. Many tunes written by Hag, many by Brumley Jr. Also, Brumley’s dad, it appears to me, wrote I’ll Fly Away. This CD is called “Two Old Friends – I’ll Fly Away”. It was recorded at Merle’s Tally Studios in California, produced by Merle, and mastered in Nashville. Norm and The Strangers are the band… A sticker on the package says, “Manufactured exclusively for Wal-Mart”.

It's un-freakin'-believable how good this album is. Even though Norm doesn't play on every cut, this cd is a real gem. The folks at Epitaph have done a real service to the music industry by staying the heck out of Haggard's way and letting him do what he does best.

Re: Ron Page's reference to the tune "I'll Fly Away" on the Merle Haggard CD, I just feel the need to ramble on for a minute here. Many members of this forum probably already know that Albert Brumley (Sr) is one of the best-known gospel song writers in this country. Besides "I'll Fly Away", he wrote literally dozens of other popular gospel numbers, including "Salvation Has Been Brought Down", "Jesus, Hold My Hand", "Camping in Canaan's Land", "If We Never Meet Again", I'll Meet You In the Morning", "This World Is Not My Home", and many others. He also has the distinction of being Tom Brumley's father (yeah, THAT Tom Brumley).
Brother Brumley was indisputably a "chosen vessel" of God during a tough time here in this nation. He trusted the Lord and laid up treasures in heaven in the form of the songs he wrote. His songs were and are a source of encouragement to thousands of Christians throughout the world. Several of his most encouraging songs, affectionately known as "dust bowl hymns", were written during the darkest days of the Depression years. Albert Brumley songs are characterized by a solid beat, a "bright" chord progression, and good words. Most are written out in shape notes for "a capella" singing and easy key transposition. Albert Brumley hymns are universally popular in the black churches, as well as in "a capella" congregations such as the Churches of Christ. And "I'll Fly Away" has been performed by just about every country music singer in the business!
One of these days I hope to go to Branson MO and take in the show that Tom and the rest of the Brumley's put on. It'll be neat to hear all those wonderful Albert Brumley songs and watch Tom play "Together Again" too. Kind of a workin' man's version of a taste of heaven here on earth. I reckon the Hag would probably agree.

Hate to bust your bubble but, I saw Tom's show twice a couple of weeks ago and didn't hear "Together Again" either time. Maby it was an oversight by the shows director or something. Still, his show is more than worth going to see. ( Thats why I went two times.)

Thanks, Tim. I suspected there might be a connection to Tom Brumley... I forgot to ask in my earlier post. So, Albert Jr. is Tom's brother.
"I'll Meet You In The Morning" is among my favorites on that album.
I have to add the Albert E. Brumleys to my list of writers and artist I discovered through my addittion to Merle Haggard music. That list also includes Jimmy Rodgers, Bob Wills, Emit Miller, and Tommy Collins.
Now I've got to go get "If I Could Fly". |

The title song of Merle's new record is a Blaze Foley composition if I'm not mistaken. That guy had a tragic ending. He was murdered around 10 years ago after protecting an old man he knew from a beating, supposedly fending the attacker (who was the old man's son) off with a broomstick. The son came back with a shotgun....
He eventually got acquited for some absurd reason on grounds of self defence. |
