I like Steve Earle's take: https://youtu.be/CvCf9UMJKZ4?t=12

"I'm not gonna tell anybody what's country and what's not, because there were people that said what I was doing wasn't country when Guitar Town came out."

Rodgers Pedal Steels

Has anyone heard of Rodgers Pedal Steels? There's one for sale on Kijiji in Montreal right now. 12 strings, 4 pedals. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-guitare/ouest-de-lile-qc/rodgers-pedal-steel-guitar/1261615944 It looks like they were made in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I'm from Alberta but I've never heard...

What's everyone's practice routine look like?

This is something I haven't seen come up too often (so I apologize if there's already a thread) but I was wondering how everyone practices the steel guitar. How much time do you spend woodshedding? How do you divide your time? Do you practice technique more or playing tunes more? Or do you practice ...

The Pedal Steel Handbook- Sold

The out of print and rare Pedal Steel Handbook by Rusty Young of Poco fame. It's written in an entertaining, informal style and has lots of useful tips and Poco solos tabbed out. I really liked the sections about arranging for pedal steel and improvisation. I bought this locally from the daughter of...

The way I interpret what people mean when they say tone is all in the right hand is that "guitars and effects won't make up for bad technique." Being able to play well is more important than the gear you use, and that's true for any instrument. I really liked The Right Hand Alpha course fr...

Thanks for the replies everyone. I ordered 3 brackets from Michael Yahl and will replace all three when I get back home. I bought the steel sort of on a whim because I don't see many for sale locally and it seemed like a good deal for the shape it was in. It's clean and plays great. I paid $1500 Can...

Broken Sho Bud Pro Knee Lever

Hey guys, I was playing a show last night and my F lever (LKL) broke off of my Sho Bud Pro I. Not the lever itself, but just above the axle where it connects to the mechanism. What are my options? Could I solder it back together or get a machine shop to weld it, or do I need to buy a whole new lever...

Hey Susan,
I ordered this last week and it arrived in the mail yesterday. Your playing is great and so are the arrangements (although I admit I'm not very familiar with Piazzolla). It's very inspiring and refreshing to hear something other than country played on pedal steel.

I'm 24- I bought a 6 string lap steel when I was 19 but couldn't afford a decent pedal steel until I finished University. I have been studying it pretty seriously for the last two years. There are surprisingly few steelers in Alberta even though there is a lot of love for country music (although the...

William Litaker's broadcasts/workshops

Just wanted to give a quick shout out to William Litaker and his Saturday afternoon (morning for me here on the Prairies!) broadcast. They are definitely a total steel at only $5 a week. You can tell William is very passionate about teaching and always shows a ton of interesting new licks, intros, a...

I've been tuning into the broadcast for 4 weeks or so now and it's well worth the modest price ($5/week!) that William charges. Lots of great technique stuff you can use as licks or to develop your right hand, along with intros and project tunes. He does a free one on one Skype session when you subs...

The same thing happened with my Linkon pedal steel- I had to jam the 3/16" driver onto the hex nuts. Not ideal. I bought a cheap metric nut driver set from Princess Auto and the 5mm driver works like a charm.

I've plotted Dave's (much better than mine) formula for the slant angle from straight bar position (for arbitrary string spacing and scale length): http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix1403/13393_slant_angle_2.jpg Which is cool, because it shows what you'd think intuitively- as you go higher up the...

It seems like it's just a trigonometry problem. If you know the string spacing between the two strings you're slanting the bar between, and the distance between the "pivot" fret (the one closest to you) and the slanted fret, divide the string spacing by the fret distance and take the inver...

Remove broken ball joint screw thread?

Today while I was practicing the ball joint screw on the A pedal of my Linkon S-10 steel broke. The ball and hex part snapped clean off, leaving the thread inside. I have to play a show tomorrow so I've swapped the A and C pedals temporarily. Is there a good way to to get the screw thread out of the...
