getting back on the horse

yea, I stopped playing for a few years. I was on a Carter Starter in a few bands and played some gigs around town. I was working a difficult day job, drinking heavily and just drifted away from it.Now I am retired and have the time and clarity of mind to do this again. I was also playing drums and b...

Sorry David I wasn't trying to be negative at all...

Sorry David I wasn't trying to be negative at all and I do apologize for the misinterpretation in my failed attempt to get my point across with words. Perhaps we just get too emotional and passionate about what we love, sometimes? or maybe I am just a loudmouth jackass? Just trying to get my 2 cents...

in praise of the Carter Starer

Hi Dave, I got a slightly used Carter Starter and it served me quite well for many years. Sure there are some drawbacks like lack of a deep rich tone and sustain but it always stayed in tune, was light weight for traveling to gigs, and gave me the basic building blocks to start with learning so I cou...

the future is here now

Why the pity party over what we don't have? The steel guitar has been saved already, alive and well in my world and doesn't show any signs of going away ever. We play the best we can as musicians and that's all we should be concerned with in terms of promoting it for the future. It's not a guitar fo...

defending carter starters

I got my carter starter in 2001 slightly used for about $550. At that time they were around $700 new. It served me well and I played many gigs with it. It was light weight, easy to modify, didn't break strings like the old Fender did, and stayed in tune with some hard playing. I could have payed a f...

perhaps it doesn't have to cost a lot to get started?

I just spent a chunk of change to aquire a fancy dbl 8x5 contemporary professional pedal steel after making the decision to move up from the Carter Starter. I joined a band recently, after a few years away from the instrument, but quickly discovered that breaking down the guitar, loading the heavy thi...

drum machines...really?

yes great idea! in addition to a drum machine, program and sequence all the guitar, bass, vocal and steel parts together so everything is perfect, hit "play" and then go sit at the bar.

a new kind of steel show

I would love to go a new kind of steel show or any type of steel specific show for that matter... but do it on the west coast, such as San Francisco or Portland. St. Louis is far away and mostly too impracticle for me to attend.

JG opened the door for me...

thanks for the post,Jerry introduced the pedal steel guitar to me when I saw him with Dylan in 1987 and a couple other dead shows later. Garcia opened the door for me and only then was I able to slowly cross over and dig into country with those nashville cats. If it wasn't for Jerry,Ben Kieth, and Da...

couldn't be happier with my GFI

I just bought a used GFI Ultra D-10 from a forum member and I couldn't be happier with it and the transaction as well. I am guessing it will give me everything I will ever need and then some from a pedal steel guitar for the rest of my life. Thanks Gene Fields for a great modern instrument with clas...
