Hi, Ron, there are a lot to choose from and a lot of variables. I have a pair of Alesis Monitor Ones I could sell, sent you an email.

KRK has some budget models. I got a pair of K-RoKs that I use at home for $200 used. They don't make that model anymore, but I'm sure you could find something used.

There are quite a few good choices, depending on your personal preferences, but I'd suggest giving the Tannoy Reveal passives a listen. The 6" models are modestly priced. Do a google search for reviews.

EVENT has several sizes and types.
The 6" monitors have been serving me well.

Used as near field and studio monitors

We have been using Spirit Absolute Zero Monitors for about six years. They have met our needs reasonably well, been operated at reasonably high levels over time and are still percolating along.

These are 5" monitors. From what I've read, they have reasonably good ratings. I bought a pair myself. Haven't heard them, but at this price point and very little space I'm going for 'em. The price @ $99.00 is "each." So the pair will only cost....well, you do the math :D

And yes, these are Powered speakers...although I believe these are basically Studio Monitors. May I ask...what does the "near field" mean?

And now I know what happens when you hit the "quote" button instead of the "edit" button.....

I like my Event TR8XL monitors. They're powered but I think Event makes a passive set too. You could probably find a used pair on eBay pretty cheap.

May I ask...what does the "near field" mean?
Near-Field Speaker: a compact studio monitor designed for listening at close distances, typically between three and five feet. When sitting at this near-field distance, the listener hears a greater proportion of direct sound from the monitors (compared to the reflected sound bouncing around the room) so, in theory, the effects of poor room acoustics are greatly reduced.
