Do women like the sound of pedal steel?

Post by erik »

This is the first time i even contemplated this question. I recently sent a mixed selection of tunes on cassette to a female friend of mine who likes Country music, and other styles of music similar to my tastes. She didn't have much of a reaction other than she liked one tune because she recognized it. So, i've been wondering if it's mostly males that like the sound of E9th pedal steel? What has been your observations?

The women I know love the sound of the steel guitar, of course if they didn't, I wouldn't want to know them. My cockatiel does also, he used to insist on sitting on my hand when I practiced. I thought it was pretty cool until he dropped one in the changer and that was the end of that.

You should be asking this question to Joan Cox, Sarah Jory, Donna Hammit, And Wanda Vick, not to mention all the unknown but very talented female steel players around the world.

My wife (of 16 years) to this day still turns into a "mound of jelly" everytime she hears Buddys' intro to "Nightlife"......
.........
Now if I can only learn how to play the damn thing.

other than the girls who ask if im the keyboard player, id have to say that most females seem rather ambivalent to individual instrumentalists as a whole, except for Kenny G. Image I also remember my mothers reaction to my dad bringing home my first psg @ 2;00 one morning in 1960.....not real positive.
I once had a sweetie that loved steel guitar & Ray Price, but hated Grady Martin's gut string guitar fills !!!??!!??? .... go figure. I know they're fans when they dance in front of me & smile alot, other than that its anyones guess as to what women really like,.... but bass players & drummers do seem to get their attention Image

Our bartender at the club I work at every weekend (who is drop-dead gorgeous) says that steel is the sexiest instrument in the world. Whatever she says.

I think that Women do like the sound of the steel.

But my wife wanted me to stick with the piano, she didn't like steel.

But we have been married 55 years, so we must be doing something right!...al Image Image

All in all, I don't think that there's a gender preference. Some people like steel and some don't. Most people just don't know if they like it or not. I think that most coutry music fans do like steel, though.

I keep on having the idea that are are more men than women that like the sound of steelguitar. To me a steelsound and a steelguitar is feminin too. But I guess it has to do with my playing Image www.steeljj.com

In 39 years of playing in bands I've encountered only one (1) steel guitar groupie, ie a girl who wanted to shag me because I was the steel player.

My wife (fortunately!) is crazy about the steel guitar sound.......
She loves the sound of the old Rick's as well as the sweet pedal sounds like Emmons and Hughey........but the frantic, speed pickin', shrillness that some fellas play irritates her almost instantly. It usually takes me a little longer to be perturbed by it.
She got so excited about steel guitar, she insisted we attend the Texas Jam last March and now has us booked into St.Louis. My first time since 1978.

Oh, wait a second... you mean because it sounds feminine most women don't care for it... ergo, bass and drums = deep voice, boisterous behavior, masculine?<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by erik on 13 August 2002 at 12:20 PM.]</p></FONT>

To me a steeltone makes me think about a womans'voice.
I don't like shouting and screaming women, neither screaming steel, however, a tone to the bone-slide (wild women Image Image ? ) www.steeljj.com

There is a theory out there that men respond more to higher frequencies and women respond more to lower frequencies, which kinda makes sense, I guess.

That explains why I'm always talking gear with dudes after a gig. Image

Of course the gals like steel guitar and everything that comes with it.
Steel players do it with their bars! Image
Now what woman wouldn't like that?

All you six string players, back of the line.

My wife hasn't missed but two gigs that I've played in 25 years. That was because she was so sick she couldn't hold her head up, but she didn't want me to stay home with her and miss a job. So yes I'd say that women do like steel music. Now days, if she doesn't go, I don't make it. She's the driver.
