Everyone Please Change Your Password

Post by Shoshanah Marohn »

A person on the forum was hacked recently. We are investigating how it happened, but, for now, we think it would be a good move for everyone to change their passwords. It only takes a few minutes.

Your password should include at least one capital letter and one number (not your birthday). We recommend using a password generator like this one: https://www.avast.com/en-us/random-pass ... erator#mac.

To change your Steel Guitar Forum password, first log in to your account. Then, at the top of the page, in the center, right above your name, you should see “Settings”. Click on that.

Image
This will take you to “update your personal settings.” Yours will look a little bit different from mine, but it should still have “password,” click on “password.”

Write or copy and paste your password twice in the space provided. Write it down for yourself to remember it, or save it in a secure file for yourself. Click on “Update.”

You’re done! Click “done return to forum Index.”
So, in summary:
1. Log in
2. Settings
3. Password
4. Get a new password that is hard.
5. Write it down or save it in a secure file.
6. Update
7. Done!

Thank you for changing your password. And also, before you buy something from a forum advertisement, please call them on the phone and verify their identity.

I changed my password recently just to check to make sure it worked. I know it worked because the old password didn't work and the new password did. And just to make absolutely sure, I just now changed it again. The process worked as advertised.

There may be some potential technical pitfalls, such as browser issues, disabling of scripts or cookies, or perhaps some other technical issue that prevented the password change from working. So first make sure that your browser is up-to-date and cookies/scripts/etc. are enabled.

Beyond that - to try to diagnose the issue further -

1. Are you absolutely sure your 2nd password matched? Everything must match exactly - any mismatched charcter, mismatched case, extra space before or after - anything the slightest bit different - will cause the password change to fail.

2. If the current password is not correct, the password change will fail. Perhaps the browser had the wrong password stored. Or did you perhaps input the wrong password.

Try these and let us know if the password won't change.

Dave as I told Shoshanah yesterday in a pm. The app on my iPhone 15 pro max brought up the strong password choice. I took the strongest I could scroll and select. It is supposedly Bulletproof(password). Time will tell..??..??..??

Done.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but in case it helps I'll mention it. A few days ago, maybe a week, I had to log in each visit, even though each time I had checked the box saying log me in automatically. Seems to be working as intended now.

Thanks for your efforts on this!

The longest post ever was probably Alan Brookes's Procrastination Workshop, which no-one ever got round to closing. (It disappeared when the Humor Section was demolished.)

? re: computer gen password saved to browser?

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

What's the consensus on having a computer generated password then having it saved in browser settings/permissions?

I'm asking because I changed my password a couple weeks back and of course I haven't memorized it yet [yes, I have it written down] so I keep entering the old one I've had for more than 20 yrs.

Since all computer gen passwords are massive and impossible to memorize, do you think it's safe to let the browser store it? Thanks in advance.

Good question!

If you have a private computer that is protected by password, that might be okay. If you are on a work computer and anyone can walk by and log in for you, then it is not so safe.

I use a program called "one password" that is recommended by security experts. It memorizes all of my passwords for me, and I only have to remember the one- kind of a one password to rule them all situation- which is I guess why it is called "one password." It isn't a free program, but it is more secure than just letting your browser remember for you.

There's also the option of using a password that is secure, but not that hard to remember. There's this site that gives you three words and a number: https://mdigi.tools/memorable-password/ I think they are secure and pretty easy to remember, too.

I'm ALL Apple stuff the last 10-12 years, and usually let my computer pick a "STRONG" password that I'll NEVER remember, but both of my computers and both iPhones are all synced so everything works seamlessly across all platforms as they are all on "Keychain"... That said I recently updated my iPhone IOS and noticed this new App called Passwords and after looking into it decided it might be a good thing, and it allowed me to share all my passwords with my Wife so in case I should meet my demise ... Anyhow EVERYTHING then disappeared from my Keychain and I had to do some backwards engineering to make the world right again.

Hopefully, unless Apple goes belly up I should be good?
