Looking for an amp under $200

Post by Neal Berniker »

My Crate amp just died. I need a new amp but don't want to spend more than $200. Looking for some suggestions. I am a beginner and play a Carter Starter S-10. When I search online Fender Mustang LT25 and Orange Crush 20 seem to get great reviews. Any thoughts?

I 2nd that!! I play that Katana and it really is fantastic. Can't go wrong. Plus it's the only really low wattage (practice) amp I've found that has a 12" speaker.

The Katana is very intriguing. What about something a little louder...

Consider hunting up a used Fender Rumble 100. You should be able to find one for 2 bills. 100 watts, 12" speaker, only 22 pounds and sounds very good with steel.

Used Peavey Bandit . . . from Craig's or GC? They are pretty strong.

Have you considered having your Crate repaired? May cost less than you think.
And, as Karl suggested, combo bass amps generally sound
pretty good for steel. Should be able to score a decent
used one for $200 or less.

Thanks for the suggestions. Ended up getting an Orange Crush 20RT for $199. Will look into getting my Crate repaired though. Will be a good backup.
