tearing the studio apart -- then rebuilding it
Well the day, or rather YEAR has finally arrived. We are tearing down the Studio Room for paint and new carpet.
3 weeks to take it apart, 2 days for paint , 1 day for carpet- 3 weeks to put it back together ! LOL You oughta see the other side of the room, the office Internet area !
I did however mark and tag all the preamps ins/outs, cables ,wires etc... so there actually is a chance that when I fire it all back up - it works . I do plan on scaling back wherever I can.
We knew this day was coming , and we also know this is the LAST time for this home project. In another 10 or 15 years I won't even remember I have a studio !
I have a few planned project sessions for the spring so I have time.

I closed my home recording studio two years ago when we downsized and moved to a Villa apartment. I still have the recording programs, studio monitors and a recording interface in case a client wants something. I just finished two 50 CD orders for one client (CD's are not dead as one forum member claims).
GFI Ultra Keyless S-10 with pad (Black of course) TB202 amp, Hilton VP, Steelers Choice sidekick seat, SIT Strings (all for sale as package)

Jack, I hope to get another year or so of activity from the Home Studio, we'll just have to see. When I put it back together I am not putting the 2nd older Pro Tools 8 system back in service, just Pro Tools 12. I can transfer sessions if need be from 8 to 12, so I am being conservative in the rebuild. I have several rack "things" and a few preamps I have not touched in a while, I can see those saying goodbye !
And no , CD's are not dead yet but they are making their way to the cemetery !
Peace !

too funny, while tearing the studio and peripherals apart, I found stuff that I forgot I had and even purchased another of the exact same thing , not realizing I already had ONE or maybe TWO !
Maybe I should have looked in the STUFF box, oh well...

I don't envy you Tony... I don't have near the amount of stuff you have, but moving what I do have caused a lot of anxiety... Just the Cables alone is more than I care to deal with. Hope this is my last move, cause the older you get the more uncomfortable that move becomes.

I recently moved my entire commercial recording studio from Denver down to South Texas-mountains of gear and racks including a 7’6” concert grand piano, Hammond and Leslie, stands, furniture etc. Managed to densely pack it all into a 24’ truck. Other than blowing a tire in San Antonio (where I limped it over to Tommy Detamore’s place and waited for the tire service including a great visit with Tommyl) it was pretty easy. Still finishing up the rewire and new install.

Awesome !
I'm just moving my gear into various rooms ! In the process though, we are cleaning out all of the storage spaces, crawl spaces, bins etc--- looking at stuff I haven't touched in years, maybe longer. I am embarrassed to say I found stuff I didn't even remember I had, and purchased yet another !
My studio room is multi purpose, not just for music alone, which off course takes up more than half the room.
The teardown and move isn't so bad, its the cleaning out and making a decision on years of stuff that I have collected and stored which is time consuming. Apparently my wife is correct, I am a pack rat ! I have the "worlds supply" of cables, stands, music books, CD's , connectors, adapters, power supplies etc...
"Don't throw that away , I might need it 10 years from now " That's me.

LOL Sam I didn't say I threw them ALL away I still have some of that "squirrel it away" thing going on, but I have made a huge dent. I'm down to the very end now and still pondering what to do with some of the cables and other small items , but I can see daylight. I do agree however that I don't need a few dozen USB cables !

and right in the middle of this I received a call to provide maybe 5 or 6 Steel E Tracks ! Go figure , Fortunately the client is ok with a month or two delay. Because right now, my studio is nothing but an empty room with freshly painted walls !
I don't see new carpet happening much before another 3 or 4 weeks. But thats ok as I am removing the carpet myself and screwing down the sub floor to get rid of those "squeaks" that have taken on a life or their own over the last 30 years .
and yep, there once was a home studio here !

Another week will be a month - this is getting old.
The room (which is over the garage) is ready and now we are waiting on carpet which is maybe 3 weeks away. I can tell you this with authority , I'm really glad my career was not screwing down sub floors to get rid of the squeaks that took on a life of their own over a few decades.
I have already advised my wife that she can vacuum directly after the new carpet is installed , but then "step aside" . LOL !

Hey Tony!
I like the color!
All of this "sounds" like a "temporary inconvenience for a permanent improvement!"
Be glad your career was not laying carpet.... talk about a strenuous, back breaking and thankless job!
It may be a pain going through this but you will be happy with the end result!

Thx Dan, you are right, this is the last time we will ever re-do this room ! I did get a call from the carpet folks, they are coming in 1 week which is prefect as I only need a day or two to complete the room prep, working in between naps of course ! I'm glad we did it as the room needed attention, but I certainly do not want to do it again , especially putting screws in the sub floor !

Alas ! Back in business, well almost , Home Studio back up and running but I will take my time deciding what stays in the room and what does not. I did make a " no clutter" promise.
Heck of a month but well worth it.
Over and out !

I like it Tony, well done.
It's amazing how much clearer, or less distracted it is in a clutter free environment. Perhaps why I do my silly little Steel Videos mostly in the Dark to help the viewer focus on the important stuff.

Studio Looks Great!
Tony,
Excellent looking studio. While I know you made a "no clutter" promise to the wife I still have to ask the question, "Where's the lava lamp?"

Dale, WIRES ! I did run all the wires, AC cords , cables etc... the ones that never move , at the rear of the studio desk, neatly rolled, tie wrapped and hung on cup hooks . With the promise to keep stuff off the floor, ( as much as possible) all AC power strips are up on top of the desk area coming off one primary outlet box. This was a pain. So there are 3 outlet strips separating the stuff that only comes on when necessary. I will confess though , it is much neater and I do like not having stuff on the floor.
The Pro Tools PC and monitor etc.. are on the main strip, the two ref monitors are on their own strip plugged into the main strip and the preamps are on their own strip also plugged into the main strip----Geesh---BUT all are in arms reach and neatly wrapped as promised
I will replace the MAIN Power strip with one that has improved surge protection and USB outlets. But not today !

After tearing everything apart then rebuilding with only the necessary items, I added a "workstation" for repairs and/or guitar work. A specific work area in the "studio room "
Now all I have to do is keep it organized and free of "junk"

Lookin' good. As I shop for a house around Charlotte I'm always looking for an open upper room for Home theater, ping pong table, pool table and music room/studio.
