Sorry to hear it! I was playing a festival in Vermont a few years back that I think was his last gig. I recall him saying that he was retiring at that time. One the true banjo greats. Hard driving and rock solid!!

yes Sir, old school , like Earl, Ralph, Sonny and few more … I don’t care much for todays banjo players , no groove , just some plinking up and down the neck running scales and stuff , no balls , no groove

So many great players’ careers were launched or enhanced after a tour of duty in one of Mr. Crowe’s bands. A true giant, not just of banjo, but of bluegrass and country music. Condolences to friends and family.

Sad to read that another great musician has left us. I still enjoy his 70s albums with the New South, and Doug Jernigan playing some terrific steel.

Condolences to his friends and family. He will be remembered as one of the greats of Bluegrass banjo.
I have spent many, many, many hours trying to learn his great style and can appreciate his work.

Damn. I love J.D. - he plays the kind of bluegrass banjo that I wanna hear. Straight-ahead and hard-driving - in a word, perfect. Not to mention that he has beeon one of the most fruitful proving grounds for at least a couple of generations of the greatest bluegrass players ever. RIP J.D.
