Pedal Steel Lessons in the Triangle (NC)

Post by James Woodall »

Hey all!

I just moved down to Durham, North Carolina. I'm looking to take some pedal steel lessons and was wondering if anybody knew anybody in the area. I'm willing to drive 2-3 hours or so every few weeks for a lesson.

Best,
James

Greg Reading - steel player for Chatham County Line, and Nathan Golub with 2 Dollar Pistols and John Howie are both triangle based.

I think they are both here on the forum. Don’t know if they teach, but might be a good starting point.

Also reach out to forum member Clyde Mattocks, a really fine long time experienced player , highly skilled, and I will add, a good guy. Even though we have not actually seen each other in a whole bunch of years :D Clyde's in your area.

I reached out to Clyde a number of years ago about lessons. He told me he wasn’t teaching anymore, although that might have changed.

Hi James, I'm in Raleigh and have been giving pedal steel and dobro lessons for many years. I helped Greg Readling and others get started and would be happy to work with you. Please PM me through the forum if interested. Thanks. Bill

James is a great guy, and very talented. We did a few lessons and they were good fun. Whomever takes him on will have a very good experience...

Hi, Doug Palmer is in Greensboro, not sure if he's still giving lessons but a great option if so.
does it look like it fits on my lap?

Lessons

Post by Bill Erchul »

Because my original post on this thread is nearly 3 years old, today's update is that I'm no longer teaching steel guitar. I continue to play pedal steel, lapsteel & dobro but realized the internet now offers a lot of quality instructional material for beginner/intermediate-level steelers, something that wasn't true several years ago. Also, there are some really great instructors who give lessons online (John McClung, Fred Sokolow & Joe Wilson, to name just a few).

PM reply sent to Pierce.

Lap steel lessons Denver, NC

Post by Julie Faust »

I’m looking for in person lap steel lessons in / near Denver, NC. I know that there are online things I can do, but I’m an in person learner. Self directed stop and go video lessons with no way to ask questions just isn’t working. Any help / suggestions would be much appreciated.

Since my name was brought up, I'll clarify. I don't give regular formal lessons, but I am glad to sit down and evaluate where you are in your journey and what you need to work on. We will be having a steel jam at the Aversboro Restaurant in Garner, N.C. on Wed. May 7. which is in the Triangle area. There will be a number of steel players there. We are a quite friendly bunch.

Julie, you might try starting a new thread with the subject "Needing Lap Steel Lessons Near Lake Norman/Charlotte, NC" since you're closer to there than to the Triangle, which is the subject of this thread. Hopefully that will get more eyes on your request. (I grew up in NC but haven't been in touch with the music scene there for many years.)
Long-time guitar player, currently being humbled by a lap steel.
