I agree Mike.A kid I have taught to play over the years came by to do some pickin last nite and told me I always pick out the hardest licks to play.I told him learning is learning it matters not how hard it is because your here to learn not play.A guy once told me.If we all liked the same thing, there never would have been any choc. ice cream. _________________ Gibson Les Paul

Anders, thanks a lot for the comprehensive link on these videos. Lot of work, I know, but greatly appreciated.
Thanks for opening this discussion Elton. It's been done before in bits and pieces, but nothing with this kind of participation and without a lot of negativity.
There should be a link of some kind to this thread for others who are interested in the range of styles steel guitar has been and continues to be involved in. |

Mike: Outlaws of country was the only show I ever watched on CMT. Very cool that you got to do that.
Here's another great unique approach to steel.

I just bookmarked the first page, and then you can come back to it any time and check the new additions. If you stickied it, it would freeze it. |

I don't know if this one has already been posted, but it appears to be pretty standard steel in a not so standard format.

WOW, that's a fantastic selection, Justin!!
Gonna take a bit of time to get to them all.
Pete Drake with George Harrison, Ron Wood with Rod Stewart, Sneaky Pete with Frank Zappa, Bruce Kaphan with Thomas Dolby, Olivia Newton-John http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCaiat__Mwc&feature=related, didn't know there was steel on THE BOXER, Motley frickin' Crue?! - dang, steel's everywhere!!
Yes, Tom Waits is a genius in my book.
He uses steel now and then, to great effect.
Here's a track from ORPHANS, the BAWLERS disc,
steel by Bobby Black!

Nice to know our instrument isn't disparaged by all artists and producers... _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

SO I was watching some Leonard Cohen videos today. And realized he had a pedal steel player with him when I saw him here a few years a go. I can't remember which songs had steel on them but the man played for 3+ hours so I am sure there were more than the one I found.

And just to get a bit out there

Hey, Justin:
I checked some live versions of LET'S DO IT A DADA, and can't find a slide or steel. Seems to be guitar, unless there's some documentation to the contrary.
However, the former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones does play bass steel:

Leonard Cohen - great!
KMFDM actually had a bit of steel, by Marc Durante.
(Hard to pick out, but it's there, according to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Durante)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdmhFhxJIXQ&feature=related
Marc's better known (to us) for his role in the Waco Brothers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdmhFhxJIXQ&feature=related
And I can't forget the great Rubber Rodeo, a relatively short-lived cowpunk band, with pedal steel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWEug9VdNDU&feature=related

On the SCENIC VIEW they did an excellent instrumental, CIVIL WAR. Find it if you can. _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

Daniel, I found out about through the discogs track listing
http://www.discogs.com/Einst%C3%BCrzende-Neubauten-Alles-Wieder-Offen/release/1127570
Of course, knowing them they could have been snipping strings off a tuned steel and recording the sounds.
I remember reading about John Paul Jones bass steel, but I had never heard it before. pretty cool.
And I hadn't listened to KMFDM since High school but I could hear some steel on there. Nice find. |

Yea, "invented" instruments may not be a category at discogs. Couldn't see anything sliding in the live performances, but that doesn't mean it's not on the recording. _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

Elton, congrats on the session. Hope to hear it sometime. maybe some of these musical outliers for steel crept into your playing.
Christopher: I think the heart of this thread was styles of music aside from country that have steel in it. We may have drifted from that but the Zepplin counts. I rarely listen to III so I kinda forgot there was steel on there.
I know my morning jacket has been mentioned but I just heard this track on the radio yesterday and thought the steel was really interesting
