Sweet Memories --- A very rough first attempt ...

Post by Jim Lindsey (Louisiana) »

Here's a quick very rough first run through the whole song "Sweet Memories" as I get my ideas together for it. I apologize that it's so rough, but I was feeling rough with a supernova hangover having had my very first experience drinking beer the night before (wish someone would have told me that beer could produce such a drastic "morning after" effect).

I'll try to get a really good second run through of this song uploaded pretty soon. :)

The initial upload failed and when I uploaded the second time, I get a "duplicate video" message ... hoping this link might work if the first one doesn't ...

Roger & Vernon ...
Thanks, guys ... I really appreciate that. I was actually a little worried about my tone (and here's where I think a lot of steel players may take me behind the barn and shoot me) because my strings are nine years old. :whoa: In this past month that I've been getting back into steel, I just haven't gotten around to buying a new set yet.

I've been reading a lot on here about some strings called Jagwires. Are y'all familiar with them and, if so, are they as good as they seem to be from what I've been reading about them?

Again, I really appreciate your comments. :) I'm only just getting back into playing again after laying off of it for nine years (been back at it for a month now) and it really feels good to enjoy doing some playing again. :D

JIm, you sound great, especially after being away from it for 9 years. I got back into it after 20 years and I know how hard it is.

As for the Jagwires, you can't go wrong with them. I use those and to me they have a good sound. They also last a long time without breaking or sounding dead.
I use the Lloyd Green type with the 11.5 on the 3rd string.

Right now I am going to be using SIT for a while. I had 5 sets given to me. That way, I will have something to compare to.

Bent ... thank you so much. I think I will give the Jagwires a try. And you're correct about the difficulty in getting back into it after a long lay off. But, the pleasure of playing again far outweighs the difficulties of trying to get some chops back up and I'm having a blast with it. :)

James ... thanks and I fully agree about seeing steel players enjoying what they do. I've been having a blast with this YouTube thing watching all the different steel players' videos and it's a very rewarding experience each time I see someone else play. I love to watch and hear them. And, seeing the myriad of styles and techniques seems to further display what a unique and fascinating instrument that many of us have chosen as our first love. :)

By the way, I'd like to express a very sincere "Thank You" to Charles Tilley, who sent me the track to play along with. :D I really appreciate it, Charles. You're great!

I think what we've all learned here today that it's a proven fact that lot's of beer makes you play as good as anyone I've heard. Fantastic rendition! Greg

Jim...that was outstanding. Everything a steel player strives for you have in your grasp. A dynamite "left" hand, tremendous accuracy especially in the "Hughey" land, and most importantly "Feel" ....Thanks for posting it and congratulations.

Wow, guys ... your favorable comments make me feel a bit humbled and happy at the same time that you enjoyed the song. :) I've been away from steel for so long it's like getting reacquainted with an old friend.

Greg, I really appreciate it. I had a blast the night before with that beer buzz going. Lots of comical things happening while trying to play. It wasn't until the following morning that I was able to get all the way through the song.

Micky, your comments on my technique have really boosted my confidence level that it's starting to come back to me ... and makes me want to play a lot more. The funniest thing is that when I chose to play "Sweet Memories", I decided that I'd just be myself on it and steer away from John's style, but there's something about that song ... you just can't help getting a little "Hughey-fied" when playing it. :)

Billy ... the brew was Tennent's of Scotland. My buddy who brought the beer over said "Here, try this. This stuff ought to put a hem in your Scottish kilt!" (he likes to kid me about my Scottish and Irish bloodline) ... boy, it did!

Wow, if you're on "Day 3" of playing steel, you're in for the most fun and rewarding thing you've ever done. :) Man, there's nothing like the newness and adventure of starting out on steel guitar. :) And, instead of some hobby that seems new at first and then gets old, steel guitar is opposite. I just keeps getting more new and exciting the deeper you get into it. :D
