Scruggs style mandolin
In the same way Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson revolutionized banjo Jesse did the impossible act of picking between the double sets of mandolin strings and conjuring an eight note roll that did actually keep up with banjo tempos... what a freaking genius...

Son of Riley Puckett

In Pursuit of the Song Long Legged by Joe Stampley
There is a repeated uptempo lick on this song and it was driving me crazy. It was obviously Emmons but how how was he doin it. So in 1997 at the St Louis convention at eight in the morning I heard this fiery guitar practicing in one of the rooms. So I asked Buddy how he played it and the answer was s...

Not a choice for the ordinary player
First off I loved the book you took the most prominent recording sessions like Someday Soon and did the appropriate interviews. My take on the book was that he really gave up any semblance of a normal steel life by being driven by an incredible work ethic There were no resting laurels with Buddy. I ...
It strikes me
I always looked at Alabama as a country music version of the Kingston Trio. With THIRTY number ones they had the pulse of commercial success. When the Kingston Trio hit with Tom Dooley there were people who thought they had citified or commercialized real folk music. Similar resentment seemed to fol...

I interviewed Brumley in 1996 on tape and he just said he was nervous and "somehow it came off"... He would have,, pardon the expression, rolled over in his grave with all this excessive Thomas Wolfe never ending analysis. Way too much

Age releases the convention performances
I remember like 15 years ago and asking if they would ever release any of the performances at the ISGC. I was told they could never get clearances from each performer. My question is did it just happen by itself? or are people feeling more generous about releasing their perfomances.... I love it but...

The Big Uneasy
In 1965 Mardi Gras i played in a New Orleans street jug band in Jackson Square... I was playing banjo but there was a lot of flak from the police who saw no value in a faux Kweskin Jug Band. We hired some very attractive hat passing groupies who for some reason liked us. On the final tuesday we got ...
