Dang - I just reread the Sullivan article, and it said the BRIDGE was Ebony, but didn't specifically reference the saddle. Sorry 'bout that bit of mis-information... Now I'll be wondering about his saddle when I listen next time. Surprised to read that he thought of quitting. That's a bummer - I tho...

From what I've read, that's an ebony saddle KJP was using. He had also stepped away from the two-piece capo to a smaller piece of ebony with a fret on the top. Here's a page to check out. http://riverratjimmy.pagesperso-orange.fr/pages/articles.htm Terry Sullivan wrote an extensive article on KJP (4...

I bought one of these for my wife for christmas, and couldn't believe how cool it was. Is the audio the built in mic? Sounds great! I rarely watch full videos, but I enjoyed yours to the end. I also dig the iPod tuner & built in speaker. My 5th Gen died a few weeks ago - I think a Nano is in my ...

Kelly Joe Phelps - "Western Bell"

Just dawned on me that this album is a perfect example for this discussion: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Bell-Kelly-Joe-Phelps/dp/B001PGMRC2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1269273181&sr=8-5 An instrumental record released in '09, it features lap slide on several very wild tracks. Comple...

So you want Elliott Sharp ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az7UdTv6rdw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrIPMVIO_Po Man, I dig Elliott Sharp! When I want to hear that kind of originality, I turn to my favorites - Elliott Sharp, John Zorn, Bill Frissell, Tim Sparks, and especially Marc Ribot. Those ar...

Compensated or not, I really dig this steel.

I don't see how a compensated saddle would compromise tone in any way, and it looks wicked cool - I dig the dual 'guards.

Great guitar. Build another, and share us some more pics!

I wouldn't call Fahey a contemporary - he died in 2001. His early work on lap steel was very influential. I'd agree that Kelly Joe Phelps is....he doesn't seem to play much lap steel currently, which is a shame. I'd argue that Fahey is more 'contemporary' than Joaquin Murphy or Jerry Byrd.. ...and ...

A forgotten contemporary lap slide player that has brought the steel into prominence (at least he did for me, anyway) was Kelly Joe Phelps - in his playing, I heard absolute originality...even if it did echo of the Willies (McTell & Johnson). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MEw9N9ox6E Another is...

Think about it this way -

A - B C - D - E F - G - A

The dashes are the enharmonic notes.

I've known musicians that spoke in only flats (no D# only Eb), and musicians that only spoke sharps (no Eb only D#).

I agree. I'd love to see a side-by-side with another dobro - especially to see the waist comparison.

If you could, toss up a body depth comparison, too..
