You said it in your last line. A COMPETENT steel player commands attention. It's just a guess, but I'd figure that most of the people that lug these out as an "oddity" aren't steel players, but regular guitar players that are "experimenting" a bit. It's pretty easy for a beginner...

Strat style guitar, HSS pickup config, Maple fret board

A Hard tail would be nice, but I certainly don wany a floyd rose or other "locking" type trem set-up.

I'm not hung up on name brands, but it must play well, and be in condition to be set-up for my playing preferences.

Looking in the $500 and less range, shipped to AZ, 85260.

some might consider that it would sound to dark with the neck pickup. I've always been a huge fan of that "woman" sound, though, regardless of what something is "supposed" to sound like. I think Alan hit the nail on the head. Do a cheap "practice run" by slightly modifi...

I believe you've got far more experience than I, but I've noticed something similar (actually a bit diffrent, but...whatever.) to what you had happen about myself. If I PLAN to perform, I'm fine. If I play on my own, I'm better. If I unkowingly get caught, or get overheard, when I don't know it, I g...

Try running the tunescreamer LEVEL maxed out, and use the drive function to finess the tone. Run the drive of the amp maxed, and use the master to dial in the volume. That should give you maximum crunch out of the amp, although it limits it's flexibility, in that you can't toggle the pedal for "...

The great thing about stomp boxes is that you can set them up any way you like. I think most people would set it up Volume, delay, then reverb...at least, that'd be the first way I'd try it, if I was going for a "standard" tone.

I had a buddy that bought a 12 string because Leo Kottke can play the individual strings, not just the courses. That didn't work out so well for him.

the gagueing does seem to be a bit unconvetional, compared to regular guitars. I still don't know why. I just bought a set from the forum. Look towards the top where, there's a "strings" tab. I paid less for a 8 string set than I do for 6 strings at GC for my strat.

Use a skateboard like I done. Been using mine for three years already with no warp. And it sounds great. Cost $29.00. Only 1/2" thick, but 7 ply laminated maple. A good conversation piece. Joe http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix/691_Mar_22051_1.jpg That is so tottaly RAD!!! Do you have pics...

I got one from work pretty cheaply, and like it, but I'm a new player, and don't have anything to really compare it to, except the other Shubb I bought, and the Corricidian "heavy" I got at the same time.
