The steel player here is Sam Makia (standing to the right of McIntire). Sam was bass player for McIntire before Aloma left the group, then took over as McIntire's steel player, and then finally Sam led the band in that room (the Hawaiian Room of the Lexington Hotel) after McIntire left. Aloma and Ma...

Billy Hew Len - Rarities

Hello, all! I haven't been around in a while. For those who don't remember me, I am an avid collector of Hawaiian music (over 20,000 recordings) who launched a 24/7 streaming Hawaiian music radio station some years ago called Ho`olohe Hou Radio. I am also an occasional steel player. Every January 18...

Mahalo nui loa to Bill for this Hawaiian treat.
Thanks, Don! I appreciate the support. So many rare and even one-of-a-kind recordings being featured. I wish it would catch on among more steel players.

But we'll keep doing it every Saturday!

Beautiful rendition! To set the record straight, "Shells" was written by Lani Kai (star of "Adventures in Paradise" and Ito in Elvis Presley's Blue Hawaii) and Alex Kaeck (formerly of the vocal group The Invitations).

Not taking anything away from Bobby by any means, but this is not a new aggregation. This is Alan Akaka's Islanders without Alan Akaka and substituting Bobby Ingano.

Alan, Kaipo, and Gary have been playing together since their Halekulani Hotel gig 15 years ago.

It was the 25th anniversary of his passing last Friday. So I thought a tribute was in order. Freddie was one of my childhood heroes. So I have a lot of obscure recordings by him - recordings on which he has not really been identified by anyone publicly. For example, he did two records with Sam Koki ...

I recently posted here about the volumes of rare steel guitar recordings I have been posting to my audio blog, Ho`olohe Hou . Some of these are one-of-a-kind or never commercially released recordings which just happen to feature Hawai`i's legendary steel guitarists. I was surprised that the post gar...

I was a huge fan of Poncie Ponce. I am not sure I would have called him a supporter of the steel guitar. He was not a bandleader; he played with the bands hired to back him. The arranger of his Warner Brothers LP - "Poncie Ponce Sings" - hired California-based Vince Akina (of The Polynesia...

I still use a bar he made me from some unknown polymer. The guy was technically brilliant.

I will try to post some video of him here soon.
