Nibros

Help. I bought a few Nibro magnets for my Valco lapsteels and would like to find a few more as the herd seems to multiply. I can't seem to track down Rick Aiello who made them anywhere. Does anyone know I might get hold of some?
Thanks, Pete Hunt.

Bridge Saddle

I've got a metal body Dobro that's pretty mellow sounding. I'd like to experiment with different bridge saddles to see if I can get a bit more of a rockin' sound out of it. Right now there's an ebony topped maple saddle in it, but I'd like to see if anyone has any ideas on alterantives. Thanks much....

Strings for a steel Dobro

I've got a steel body Dobro from the mid-80'. I'd appreciate any suggestions on what strings to use on it. I play country blues on it and like a sharper sound and haven't been entirely happy with phosphor bronze. On this guitar, I usually play in E major or A tuning. All suggestions are welcome. Tha...

Custom Bars

Does anybody know of anyone who can make a custom stainless bar? I have a particular shape I really like, but stock they're too long. So I have to cut them down, then they score easliy (probably because my playing is not to far from gorilla-style when I'm playing R&B). I know I could soften my t...

Pickup for a metal bodied Dobro

I'm gettin' pretty tired of lugging a mike and stand around...any suggestions for an add-on pickup for my metal bodied Dobro? I play mostly country blues on this particular instrument and want to keep the "metal" sound. I'd compromise a bit on sound in order not to drill into the instrumen...

pickup for a metal-bodied Dobro

Any suggestions on a pick up for a metal bodied dobro? I play mostly country blues on it and would like to keep the "metal" sound (and stop lugging microphones and stands around).
Thanks in advance,

Where I keep 'em

I keep a couple of bars in cases and my favorite speed bar (right now a cut down Robert Randolph #1) in my gig bag in a zippered pouch. Then in my pack I carry around some picks and an old stevens bar tied up in a sock. Yep, a sock. I'm right now headin' to the store for some mini M&Ms. I'm goin...

Valverb vs. Premier Reverb

I'm thinking of ditching my Holy Grail reverb in favor of a tube unit...always liked the tube sound better. I had a Premier about 40 years ago and if I think back through the fog of the sixties, I remember that it sounded great but was really sensitive to all the the stumbling around on stage. I stu...

Thanks, Guys,

I'm sure that the Roberts driver would work, but I can't resist Ken's tip of something with the actual name of a "Weird Head Screwdirver" from fliptops.com.

Thanks again,
Pete

Ampeg Rocket Screws

I went to clean out my early 60's Ampeg amp and tried to remove the chassis to get some of the layers of gunk out of the pots, etc. When I went to unscrew the faceplate I found that it was held in place by some of the weirdest screws I've ever seen. Nothing that I have (or that my friend the gear gu...

Finding a replacement knob

I have a Roy Smeck Special Gibson EH-150 that is missing a knob. It's a bakelite rosette knob like all the EH-150's. How can I find a replacement knob? Does anyone know a good source of replacement knobs? I understand that Gibson sometimes used radio knobs on it's early guitars, are there any radio ...

How about removing decals?

I read the solutions for the Supro with masking tape gunk on it...I'm wondering if anyone has experience getting decals off? I've got a Valco MOTS 6 string that someone pasted decals up the neck for an E scale. Great if you only play in E.......but, geez, I'm tryin' to branch out... Do folks think n...

Kahlman (?) lap steel

There's a "Kahlman" lap steel on ebay. Item 380015122704 (sorry, I don't know how to do a link). Never saw anything like it in my limited experience. Anybody know anything about it?
Thanks

I do it pretty regularly. Security always asks what they are, so I put them in one of the bins rather than in my carry on bag. I say they're for playing a "country steel guitar" and just cruise on through.

When I was 12 and carrying my EH 150 on the bus to lessons, I'd have to say, "It's NOT a violin!" when the other kids snickered. Now I just call it a lapsteel.

That was a really nice piece to see. Seems to be a bonus, too. There's a great cut by Bukka White (Listed as Booker White) playing slide guitar in the column to the right of the clip. If you listen to that song (which is amazing) a cut of Mr. White playing "Poor Boy" lap-style with a kitch...

I vote for vintage, too. I got a few vintage lapsteels off of ebay with nothing but good instruments at a fair price (although maybe this is the one area in life where I'm lucky). I still go into pawnshops and music stores and ask if they have any old lapsteels, though ebay seems to have done away w...
