Another interesting observation. The seller of this item also has 4 or 5 other lap steels up for auction, and each of them has a much higher than usual number of bids. The Fender has 52, Epiphone 25, and a couple of Vegas with 13 & 14. I've been checking out the lap steel auctions daily for a co...

Good advice guys. I think I'm going to set up the Maverick and take some pics here soon to sell her. In the meantime, I'll use it to practice on a little to get used to E9th tuning, string spacing etc. and look for a decent 3pX4L to upgrade to. Thanks for all of your input. BTW, I still also plan on...

Thanks for all your input. The prevailing opinion is to not modify the guitar but get a stand. That was what I was thinking but wanted to get some other ideas from others. I'm going to invest in a stand. Plus the stands reccomended here are a lot cheaper than buying legs and sockets! Thanks again al...

I thought of that but really couldn't find one. Most of them seem to be very heavy or expensive ($200+).

Starting with pedals again

I've been playing 6-sting lap steel (C6th) for the last 3 years and am thinking of moving to a pedal steel. I own a Sho-bud Maverick that I bought back in the mid 70's when I was playing county folk music. Based on reading a number of posts here, would I be better off staying with the Maverick for a...

Leggs???

I have a '59 Silvertone 1312 lap steel. It's the one pictured in my avatar. It's in excellent condition, no major marks or scuffs, all electronics work and it sounds great. I am considering installing legs on it but not sure if this is a good idea due to changing the sound or lowering its value. Any...

Thanks for your responses. Since I am using a laptop, I don't have access to the sound card. But I do have access to a scope. Never thought of that. I play C6th lap steel and my High E and Low C strings seem to blair out. I know part of the problem is my technique, but I'm sure that balancing their ...

Pickup Adjutments

Is it possible to measure the output of a pickup by attaching a meter to the output cable? I'm trying to balance the output volume of the strings. I've been turning the adjustment screws and that helps, but I thought there might be a away to actually get a measurement instead of just using my ear. (...

If you liked Steel Guitar Magic by the All Star Hawaiin Band, you'll love Hawaii's Greatest Hits, also by the All Star Hawaiin Band, featuring Barney Isaacs on Steel Guitar. I have both albums and Hawaii's Greatest Hits is by far my favorite. Barney's steel work on this album is simply fantastic. FY...

Practice Board?

I've noticed a few posts talking about practice boards. Exactly what is a practice board? Do you tune one? Does it have strings? Are they for lap steels only? etc. I'm looking for something to travel with without lugging my lap steel with me because air travel and instruments are geting to be a big ...

The show opened in Estero Fl last night. Saw it and wasn't too impressed. Although a big Jackson fan, I found it for the most part boring. Also, the sound folks never got the sound right for any of the 3 acts. It could have been an issue with this specific venue, Alico Arena, but you couldn't make a...

Paul, try touching the strings with the side of your hand (the hand that holds the bar) or your pinky and ring finger just before the bar touches them. This will mute or dampen the strings as the bar is about to touch them. You can also palm block with the picking hand, but for applying the steel to...

Does anybody know who the band members are (especially the steel player) for Alan Jackson's upcoming tour? He opens it here in Fort Myers and I'm thinking of attending.

Finally saw it last night. I thought the movie was good, 3.5 out of 5. Maggie G was OK, didn't think her part was casted properly. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised at Colin Ferrel. Had no clue he could actually sing, and he was good! Jeff Bridges.... Priceless! Not only was his singing fa...

Thanks Larry, I counted the wrong way (low to hi). I play c6th lap steel so I'm trying to adapt the exercise to make sure I get the right interval. So for c6th, I could use the A & G strings for the exercise, with the base tone of A. (I think????)
