Bizarre! I just did this same fix myself! I also have a Carter Starter. My whole thing though started with the tab that the lever is attached to...soft, cheap metal, it always bent back towards me as I was playing, thus throwing the lever's tuning out of whack. Does yours do this? To fix that I weld...

Do you know what year your amp is? What are the numbers on the other transformers? Specifically the numbers that start with 606-xxx? Does it have a pull boost on the volume knob? That will help you figure out exactly which schematic you need. I believe Fender started installing 3 prong plugs and rec...

I'll go with a hand-wired...if only because they're easier to work on. Not everything hand wired is created equal though. I had a '77 135w UL a couple years back and it sounded good, but not great. A little sterile. I tried some mods that a guy outlined in the archive pages here to turn the tone sta...

On the other hand, if any of you are looking for a heavy amp that's harder on your back, try a Fender Twin.

Just curious...what kind of amp is that Guido? Looks like a Vibrolux, I have an '80 and love it. If it's the Vibrosonic you have listed in your sig, it looks more like a '69 than a '79.

My Carter Starter does this on the Eb string after lowering. I just lower it once real quick before tuning it @ the headstock, after that it seems to be consistent. I always keep the nut on my 6 string guitars lubed with graphite but have never tried it on psg. Maybe it would work better. Food for t...

- With a tuner you have to check strings and pedal/lever combinations individually, and you can only reliably check open strings and harmonics - no bar. Takes time - you know better than me how much time it usually takes. - By ear you can strike a few chords almost anywhere on the neck, push those ...

I use a Boss TU-2. I take it out of the sig chain once I'm done using it. I tuned my 6-string guitars for 18 years by ear and never had a problem but I had to buy a tuner when I started steel, just so I could spend more time playing the thing. It's hard enough when you can't remember what the string...

For me, I've pretty much got the sound I'm chasing. Problem is, it's a Carter Starter into an old Fender Vibrolux. So when I finally upgrade to a better guitar, I'll probably have to change amps! :D Nah, probably not. I think the 10" speakers coupled with the tube rectifier are the bulk of what...

Is this a progessional gig? Sounds like it. My take if that's the case is: Try to get the bandleader to make an exception for you for any reason you can think of :D and if that doesn't work...it's a guitar. It's a tool, a means to an end...that guitar is the reason you're on the bus traveling around...

Sounds like the same problem mine had with 3 different strings...a real "pingy" or "piercing" sound that starts a fraction of a second after you pluck the string. Make sure there's no lint or dirt or anything on the changer finger or in the nut slot. If they're both clean, try sm...

Pedal Steel, Lap Steel, or regular guitar??

On another forum, someone posted this video of Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp9852hq0W0 My first thought was, I don't think that's a pedal steel you hear on the recording. The overall tone and the attack of the notes sounds too sharp, it sounds more like sli...

Most of us here are probably familiar with e-scams by now...but I just wanted to share this one. I found an ad on my local Craigslist for a 1968 Emmons D10 8+4. The asking price was $700. I have a 70's Twin that I like, but unless you get one with JBL's you'd do well to change out the speakers. I use a WEber California and Blue Dog in mine, sounds great with clean headroom for days.
