Watch Out For This Guy!

Post by Colin Mclean »

Most of us here are probably familiar with e-scams by now...but I just wanted to share this one.

I found an ad on my local Craigslist for a 1968 Emmons D10 8+4. The asking price was $700. Ha ha, I know, I know...but you never know, right? Could be a disgruntled ex-wife, clueless grandson trying to get rid of inherited "junk"

So I contacted him about it, just to see what the outcome would be. Our correspondence is below:
Hello ,

Thank you for your interest in my Emmons Pedal Steel Guitar D10 8+4 1968. The asking price is $700 . The unit is exactly as described in my advertisement. If you want to buy it, I will have to deliver it to you from my store in New York . Shipping and all delivery taxes ( including insurence ) are included in the price. Also you will receive a 30 days Money Back Guarantee.

If you want more photos with it or any other details, please feel free to contact me .

Thank You,
Miguel Andres
My response:
Andres,

Sounds great. Can you send me the guitar for a test drive? If I like it, I'll
send you the money. If not, I'll send it back and pay for shipping both ways.

Thanks,

Amos McWoods

His latest response to me, try having a look at his link...
Hello,

For the transaction I suggest we use Fedex COD so we can be both protected. Here is the link :

http://www.fedex-cod.com/newcashondeliv ... n=%2Far%2F

If you accept to do it like mentioned on the FedEx Website ( the link above ), please email me your name and complete address and I will get the guitar to a FedEx office in a couple of hours.

Thanks,
Miguel
The "Fedex" link is what made me wanna post this here. Pretty scary, I hope no one has been scammed by this guy. I could tell right off there was something fishy about the page, shady looking text, spelling errors, etc...and the payment method (mentioned nowhere on the real Fedex site) is a dead giveaway.

Oh well, I knew it was too good to be true!

Nice work there Eugene! I didn't think to do the Who-is search...

I did file a complaint with the IC3 though...right before my post here. That was the first order of business.

Is the address in Denmark? That's what it looks like...

82.165.212.104 is HQ'd in Germany.

I believe the DE is Deutschland.

Well a WHOIS is often among the first things I do when I suspect something is supicious. I also do traceroutes to originatin IP's from email headers. And see what domains they are associated with.

EC can you post all that personal info about somebody without their consent? Pretty unlikely but what if it is a real item to be sold?

Colin this is my take, I had somebody want me to send them my guitar for a test drive! Not a chance! If I would send out my guitar to somebody for a test drive it will never return. So what do you in this condition? That is why I buy sight seen, so far I have never been burned!!

Ha ha I know AJ. I would never mail my guitar to anyone without payment either! It's just when I saw the ad I knew one of three scenarios was brewing here:

a)the $700 price in the ad was a misprint

b)someone didn't know what they had

c)it was a scam

As soon as I got his first email I knew it was a scam. I just wanted to see what he would say in response. :D

As far as his personal info, anyone can look that up. Just like when you register a DBA, when you register a web domain, your info is public.

I posted a lookout for this scam last week on the forum under instruments for sale. The pics are the same as the guitar that sold on Ebay last Sunday for over $3400. I sent a email but got no response.
