Belated new of the passing of Art Ruymar

This is not breaking news but I thought that I would pass on that Art Ruymar, husband of Lorene Ruymar, passed a little over a year ago on December 9 2021. A constant and loving companion to Lorene Art, was a superb musician . I don't think anyone has posted this information to this group where I kn...

Lorene Ruymar (Petersen)

The mother of my first wife ,Lorene Ruymar, passed this morning in Vancouver Canada. Well known player, educator and historian, Lorene made a significant impact to the North American steel guitar community. She will be greatly missed.

Mavericks for $750-decent deal?

I'm looking for a simpler lighter E9 pedal steel. Is this a decent choice. FWIW I'm in Vancouver BC. Anything to watch out for? Other options?

Thanks

Single coil hum is making me hate my steel

This is a 1968 Sho-BUD prototype steel done for Bobbe Seymour which I purchased from B Hamilton. A double 10 C6 E9. There is pickup switching and coil tap at belly button placement between the two necks, A lot of non-shielded wire Going on along with single coil P/U means that in certain spaces this...

Carter Starter or Pro

I tried a Carter Starter and I think for a brand new guitar its amazing what they've done. I was all set to buy and then I checked a used Sho-Bud. Even though it was double the money it was more than Double the guitar! It has not been without a few issues but I have no regrets. At my age:I'm turning...

Canadian source for 500k pot

I notice on Bobbe Seymours site that the favoured pot is made here in the Great White North. Anyone know where I can get one here in BC.

Stainless vs nickel

Putting on my shop teacher hat I would comment that there are many complex factors at work here. Rockwell numbers being one of them. The other thing to consider is that for any given gauge of material the overall mass and hence the natural resonant freq of any object that oscillates is dependent on ...

Feeling pretty happy

Well thanks for all the feedback. I'm feeling pretty happy about what was a bit of a shot in the dark purchase (an expensive one for me) Just put a new set of strings on E9 (D'Addario stainless wrap) and the sound is Awesome! I'm just using a Solid state Fender 100 watt stage lead but to me it sound...

Front\top views of My new Sho-Bud

As requested some front pics of my oddball sho-bud The last picture shows the worst of the lacquer cracking. As someone noted some of the most beautiful wood in this guitar is underneath--sigh http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix/6356_steel_front_1.jpg http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix/6356_s...

Weird, it doesn't have the undercoating sprayed on it, like most Professionals. There are no holes for coil taps or neck selector switch on the end-plate... Let's see some pics of the rest of it. The story told to me by the guy (Bruce Hamilton) I bought it from is that it was a prototype built for ...

[quote="John Billings"]Baskets and barrels, and no coil tap? Check you pickup wires. If there are three wires, you have the ability to have coils tap pickups. The pickups have the coil tap wired in to either side of the pickup selector which is between the two necks. I'll post some more to...

Can I acquire sho-bud pull rods and barrels?

I think on my C6 neck I might like to try playing around with creating some more elaborate setups (copedents). In a pinch I could probably machine something up--I have a metal lathe--but--getting some off the shelf parts would be easier. Any folks out there with a cache of sho-bud parts or repro par...

Proper Sho-Bud Lubrication

So I've been spending a few hours "under the hood" of my recently acquired D-10 8/4 sho-bud getting it set up for me. Its been an interesting experience and I definitely feel alot more comfortable as to how it all works. When I get the time and the grey matter to figure it out I'll post so...

Playing PSG without finger picks--Am I the only one?

I've been trying for the life of me to get comfortable with the little beasts but apart from the fact that you can get a sharper attack, I find I navigate the guitar better with just my fingers. I mentioned this to a local player and he thought I was nuts and that my fingers would be in shreds in sh...

Steel Newbie=Many questions. Patience please

Good day all, I got bitten by the steel bug awhile ago. Here in Vancouver there is not much of PSG scene that I am aware of. A couple of shops had the Carter Starter which I tried but ultimately ended up buying an old Sho-Bud D-10 8 pedal 4 kl steel from a Mr Bruce Hamilton. Because I am new to this...
