Thanks for the link, Twayn. I went looking around Susan's site, and found another beautiful sound sample here . There was a recent thread on the old forum discussing the same YouTube video. After a variety of responses to it (some very dismissive), Susan wrote an eloquent description of its context ...

I read Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs a few years ago, just for a laugh. His list also came from reader votes, and also had "MacArthur Park" at #1. Dave Barry made a good point in his book - to make the list, a song had to be famous enough to annoy lots of people . He said some truly bad s...

I agree with Steinar on the DIY approach. Earlier this year, six Canadian indie labels came to the same conclusion about who the CRIA (Canada's RIAA) supports, and left it . It's also discussed in this excellent blog post by an Ottawa intellectual-property lawyer. Key quote: "we do not feel tha...

I bet Santa would know how to use all the pedals and KLs on this guitar.

As for my picture of Santa b0b, it would've taken me all day to include pedals and rods. I <STRIKE>wasted</STRIKE> spent enough time on that picture as it was. (I apologized to b0b by e-mail for that omission.)

What Basil, Doug B, Dave and John said. <SMALL>As Doug says, there is no Eb in the key of E. Jesse, IMO your post does an excellent job of distinguishing between Kenny G and serious jazz players. For much of jazz's history, the greatest players - those who devote their energy to understanding, then advancing, the music - have usually been able to lament their relatively low sales. Now, if t...

Yes, BJ Cole played with Sting. BJ's own website has some recollections about it here.

I've read that he's on David Gilmour's latest CD as well.

As a beginner on steel, I've followed this thread with interest. I may be out of my depth, but here are some thoughts and thanks. Like weather, tone is a complex system. It's safe to say it's affected by almost anything (including the weather). IMO, we can't even begin to discuss it without using a ...

My first thought was Ray Benson and Santana...now that might be more odd. I'm not surprised this works. Their styles really complement each other, and IMO they were both mining similar pop/jazz territory in the '70s. The suits crack me up, though. Trivia: Gabor Szabo recorded this tune before George...

Great question, Stephen. I see at least three pieces that deserve attention. 1. Resonance / "Tone of Voice" 2. Technique (Pitch, breath support, enunciation, etc.) 3. Feel / Ability to Communicate I've heard people with rich, pleasant voices who can't carry a tune - like your example of Ra...

Dekley student model - 3+2? Can I add KLs?

After months of watching for a decent E9 PSG in my price range, I bought a used Dekley student model in September. I'm very happy with it. I got a great deal, and I've begun learning to play E9 for real. Here's my question: My Dekley has 3 pedals and 2 knee levers. Were some of them made this way, o...

Jay, I'm a fan of David's. Somehow I hadn't noticed steel on his recordings, but I just checked CD credits, and there it was. On David's CD A New Day at Midnight , B.J. Cole played pedal steel on "Caroline," and Tim Bradshaw played lap steel on "Last Boat to America." David's lat...
