 Well, I thought we'd hold up for a couple of weeks (or longer) so that the Deuces management would see that we deserved better than we were getting. "No Rick... you're not the leader any more." The band mutineed, and went back into the 4D and they've been playing ever since. NO PAYI...

Hogan

I don't think it's for sale. Johnny Noland (South Side Johnny's) bought it and has been fixing it up. I understand that street people were living in it for a while and really messed it up. I need to talk with him about what kind of music he's going to have. (SSJ is rock & blues) I'll let you kno...

Well, Chuck Smith (from Safford, AZ) showed up for our 31st jam. It was WONDERFUL!!! He would play all those great steel licks on his universal, and we would all get a big smile on our faces!! But I have been pretty badly treated by the manager of the Four Deuces, and we will quit playing for a whil...

I put a lot of stuff about Western Swing on the website this morning. I forgot about one of my important ELECTRIC influences -- Eldon Chamblin. How could he have played all that stuff without an electric guitar??

Amps?

You bet your sweet a** we do!! I have no use for "Acoustic Nazis" -- I call them -- who seem to think that just because a bunch of ignorant kids don't learn how to use their instruments, we should trash them all. All of my heroes, from Merle and Chet, to Curly, Bud & Buddy, played elec...

I take my stuff in about 4. People start showing up and setting up about 6. Officially, we start at 7, but sometimes we play a little before that. It's a circle jam, everybody gets to play, take turns calling tunes. Very friendly, very competent group, with a few "open mike" set-ins to cha...

Still pickin' in Tombstone

We just finished our 11th week at the Four Deuces. Always at least 12 players or more! Very competent, very smooth -- observing all the right "breaks", holding the volume down, playing mostly "Americana" -- Country, country, country-- with a little classic rock & pop thrown i...

These Jams have been cancelled until it warms up a little! March or April. Just too cold for the old folks to come out and dance!

Too bad. It was a lot of fun playing, and we made some good music!

Progress Report

Oakley is a gem to play with!! We had a minimum of sit-ins, and a handful of listeners, but we sure had a good time. Christmas is grim for bar action, however, so we probably won't really get going good until after New Years. Tanks to everyone who showed up!!

This week's Jam at the Hogan (Colo Spgs)

This Wed (Dec 19) we will be featuring Oakley Cassaboom -- relatively new to the Springs -- on his U-12. Lots of other folks showing up to pick and grin, or dance and grin. <grin> Son Tim (keybds & accordion) will be playing at Jack Quinn's, downtown. Next week -- I'll bring my own Dekley again....

Thanks to everyone who showed up! Jamie played my Dekley and did just fine, in spite of his protestations that he's never played in public. I'll post another msg for the jam next week.

Rory

Rory has been here all along, altho he gave his steel to his daughter. He had my steel for a while. But about two months ago, he went to live with a daughter in the pacific northwest, after the place he was living in (for 13 years) got sold out from under him.

We all miss him.

Hogan -- COS

By the time I arrived in COS (1970) the premier place was the Cow Palace, which Jack Jackson started after he sold Crossroads West in Albuquerque. 7 nights of Live C&W, a big hardwood dance floor, and Cocktail Waitresses that had you "drinkin' or leavin'." In the 70's, there were 20 cl...

Hogan

Yes, the Hogan, superficially, still looks about the same. Same Neon Indian Chief on the roof! Same arched ceiling inside. Owners a couple of times back (hee hee) put in a really good sound system so you don't have to take your own in. (What a boon for a jam, eh?) They've had nothing but Blues for t...
