Gibson Lap Steel for sale- must see!

I could not by research determine the age of this steel, but when I heard it, I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately, right now I need money more. Check it out at E-Bay, item 3744168906. It sounds so good. I still have some tracks in the can that I am going to release some day.

Ricky,

The pickups themselves are black, but the casing is silver which matches the big silver plate surrounding the whole bridge. The instument came with a tuning key which fits around the plastic or nylon fine tuners. It has a strange insignia on it that I cannot decipher.

Thanks,

Don

Yes, you are correct- it is a ten string with 3 pedals and only 2 knee levers. It is that dark red with the yellow and black ribbon on the front. The pedals appear to be about 1 1/2 inches wide. The knee levers are curved. The top edge of the front is slightly curved. I think there are 10 changers. ...

How old is my Sho-Bud?

Rookie Here,

The label inside the case has serial number 6178 and model 6148. Assuming I have the original case (which it appears to be)how old is this unit and did I get a winner?

Thanks,

Hey, that's the same color as my Pro 1. I'm such a rookie, I can't even get the legs set up right.

Christmas CDR

I just released an instrumental CDR of Christmas tunes. All of the songs feature the Gibson Lap Steel that I picked up a few months ago. On one song, I added my PSG as well. What I hope is unique about this project is that the arrangements are really closer to Jazz than any other style. The chords w...

Hey, this is a great topic! I had a lot of fun with Drew's idea of stacked fourths and quickly saw that by transposing the b7th on the 4th string to the octave below on the 8th string you get a 125 triad which is inverted fourths. Going back and fourth on the same fret between the two chords gives a...

I have only been playing PSG about six months, but this comes after playing fingerstyle guitar for about 30 years. Though nearly all modern classical guitarists play with their fingernails for volume, some of the originators of the technique prefered the tone from the flesh. I am enjoying playing th...

I caught that show by accident and was really impressed with Joe and Chris. I was amazed at how full the steel sounded. I also learned that one get clear harmonics on the steel in places other than 12 frets up. Oddly, one of my guitar students bears the name Terry Crisp.

One should be able to tell how each mode compares to its major scale. For example, the Dorian mode flats the 3rd and the 7th of the major scale. Here is a chart: Dorian -3,-7 Phrygian -2,-3,-6,-7 Lydian +4 Mixolydian -7 Aeolian(pure minor)-3,-6,-7 Locrian -2,-3,-5,-6,-7 I have a disc coming out for ...

Some prefer to use the word position to inversion in these cases and reserve the term inversion for changes in the bass. However, on the steel it is not very often that you get to be your own bass player. Just recalling some old theory from my Harmony Lessons book. I hope it is right.

Hey, I am new to the Steel, but I will put in my two cents. I have learned how hard it is to play in tune for a whole song. As for music in general, I would agree that vocal music contains more value, but only if something of value is being communicated. As time goes on, I realize that fewer and few...

Rusty Young

I was about eleven years old when I first saw Rusty Young go wild on his steel. He really had to because Poco was warming up Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It was the most exciting concert I had ever attended. Just recently, I heard the original version of "Kind Woman" by Buffalo Springfield. R...

Best bar size?

Okay folks, I must confess that I purchased an old Gibson Lap Steel. It came with 3 different bars. After I played it exclusively for about a week, I finally wandered back to my steel. It was then that I realized how big and heavy my PSG bar seemed. When I bought the steel, they convinced me to purc...

I listened to the records shortly before the storm and practiced without amplification. Incidentally, I think I prefer to listen to steel work on songs with vocals.

Jim,you are right, I forgot about the 1/7. Jerry, your answer was quite clear, your compliment quite nice, and thanks for telling me about this site.
Dale, not to beat a dead horse, but thanks to folks like Messina and Stills, I was plucking long before I heard of Mark K.

Hurricane/Emmon's LP's/Riddle

Because of the hurricane, I had no electricity for 72 hours which gave me lots of time to practice. One of my friends (a superb guitarist)is letting me borrow his vinyl copies of Buddy's "Minors Aloud", "Steel Guitar", and Hartford's "You and Me at Home" which features ...

Out of curiosity, I just dug out my old vinyl copies of Poco 2, From the Inside, and Rose of Cimarron. The most obvious comment about From the Inside is how grumpy they all look on the cover. Cotton's song- Railroad Day's is an obvious swipe at Messina leaving and it comes off pretty foolish. From t...

The case for Messina: 1. He mastered playing parts in harmonty in a era when most cats were only playing single notes. 2. He is just as strong, if not stronger on the accoustic guitars, both steel and nylon. 3. He kept growing as a musician and eventually played almost almost every style. 4. If he p...

First Timer/beginner/Byrds/Poco

Greetings, I just picked up a Sho-Bud Pro 1 a couple weeks ago and decided to learn the instrument. While a teenager, I saw Rusty Young play with Poco two pretty unforgetable times. At one show he seemed extremely motivated because they warmed up Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Then, I got hooked by the ...
