Years ago I arrived to listen to a close friend of mine (Danny Cormier) playing a gig on his pre-RP Mullen and it was one of the best sounding steels I’d ever heard. When I walked up to see what pickups he was using (expecting something like original 705’s) I was amazed to see E-66 on both necks! My...

Quite impressive creation and one can’t argue the extensive benefits. But (and please correct me if I’m wrong) every sound is a digital interpretation of the input signal from the strings rather than the actual sound of the strings. Latency has come a long way over the years and is minimal and nearl...

Dennis, I see Larry has your answer, which is good as I haven’t had the opportunity to use the Tone Block. I know on peavey amps you can use the “preamp in” and it will bypass the preamp section. Obviously, the tone block has the same capability with the effects loop. BTW, I ordered the MXR M81 peda...

but the Tone Blocks created some hiss (white noise). I don't know why? Placing a preamp in combination with a combo amp preamp section is going to create extra input signal that will cause excess noise and overdrive, in most instances, as opposed going into strictly a power amp, such as the Carvin....

Some bass amps in the past have been very good steel amps and your find is interesting. I’ve been wanting to try something different, affordable, and compact so this may fit the bill. Thanks for the info, Dennis!

Is 20K ohms a 605 ?
No…it’s a 705.

705 reads 18K to 21K dc ohms
605 reads 15K to 16K dc ohms
805 reads 26K to 28K dc ohms

Stewart PA-200 power amp $100 shipped

I’ve used Stewart power amps for many years. I’ve kept an extra for a backup but I’ve never had one fail. 200 watts bridged or 100 watts stereo and one of the few power amps that can be bridged into a 4 ohm speaker. Clean compact power weighing 6 lbs. $100 shipping included lower 48. Thanks, Dave 🙂 ...

Anyone who works with wood can appreciate the beautiful work with added innovation. The alternating inlay on the neck and apron was a great touch. But this is the first I’ve seen a contoured neck. Absolutely stunning work of art!

Jay, that is the Zoom pedal I’ve been using for years and couldn’t be happier. There’s a learning curve and it’s somewhat more challenging to navigate than many previous units. But the effects and versatility in such a small pedal is of superb quality!

Chuck, Dave’s explanation is essentially correct. But completely submerging isn’t necessary. Carefully remove the covering around the windings and use a candle to drip melted wax onto the wound wire. The wax will quickly solidify and stop any loose windings from moving, which is what’s causing the m...

Glad you found and fixed the issue! We’ve all had to improvise many aspects, including pickups. Any of the exposed magnets will be more sensitive and both 710’s and XR-16’s are hot pickups that need to be a distanced from the strings or you’ll find the exact challenge you had to remedy. I’ve had bot...

You’re already on to a good fix. George L’s pickups will work great for those of us who pick too hard as the magnets aren’t exposed and it adds a slight buffer for picking nuances. The SS-10 pickups are fantastic! All the bass and depth response with crystal clear highs that aren’t piercing and full...

Ah yes! Bud Carter. A master builder credited with major aspects of modern all pull steel guitars. I was fortunate enough to visit with him at the Carter shop and fascinated listening to him explain concepts dating back to early MSA. His masterful skills are easily recognizable on the brands of whic...

Sorry, but comparing Carter BCT to a Zum Hybrid is like comparing a skateboard to a Ferrari. Totally different concept mechanically. Carter was standard with BCT starting in 1998 and only a limited supply of Zum Hybrids were built and they command 3 times price of a Carter. By all accounts from owne...

Wax the windings and re-install the pickup should resolve your issue. I’ve done several in years past with great results.

I believe John & Bud incorporated this design as standard in 1998 and the year model can be ascertained by the 2nd & 5th numbers of the S/N.

Henry, this is my opinion and mine only! I found the BCT really to be a marketing project for Carter in an attempt to capture market share by supposedly emulating the tone of an Emmons PP in an all pull Carter and I believe it failed to achieve any such semblance. In fact, to my ears at least, it de...

I’m sure some others can chime in…but I’m a fan of Stewart PA series power amps. You can still find them on eBay and reverb. Compact, lightweight, clean tone, and inexpensive! I’m still using them with my equipment. 🙂

The session 400 is likely loaded with a 4 ohm speaker as is the NV1000. You can only have a 4 ohm total load so you can’t run both of those speakers. Only if you have 8 ohm speakers in both amps. Running both 4 ohm speakers will result in damaging your session 400. 🙂
