I was given a gift of lessons at his Tennessee home by my wife not long before he died. We went to lunch together at the Cracker Barrel. I tried to pay for the lunch and we went back a forth, he insisting to pay. Finally, he looked at me and said "You ever have a little bitty guy just beat the ...

John D. McDonald, in one of his Travis McGee novels, made a point that sticks with me. The question was whether a "pop art" painter was a skilled artist. The point was made that Picasso could draw a horse with perfect proportions and always had the skill and training to depict objects accu...

A little off topic but like them or not, the Beatles changed contemporary music forever. They played two or three years under contract in the red light district of Hamburg. This is where the long hours of music came in. Bernstein study and interpreted some of their early work such as Norwegian Wood....

There's another book to read titled "Outliers". It speaks of the skills of the Beatles, Bill Gates, and other "Greats" in their field. It's all about practice and exposure. In these cases, 10,000 hours is the benchmark.

Both are worth a read.

Still....I suggest reading the book. It's pretty specific on how to practice and improve. Could be that the "talented" just do a better job of practicing.

I spent a week at his woodshed a few months before his death. Pictures and comment at www.davidw.smugmug.com . During my week with him, he said he would take me to breakfast. As we walked into the restaurant, I argued with him that I should pay. He gave me a cold look and said "You ever have a ...

I don't have the tab for this so let me try to describe how I play it. It is a little different than you tabbed and I think it is easy. I start where you did on 8 but instead of going to 15, I stay at 8 and pick 3-1-3-3KLower-3 - then I slide to 10 and voice it on strings 5 and 6 using the AB pedals...

I love the response Pete. EXACTLY!! I'm an over the hill, never to be good steel player that does practice to get better. I play in a band and get paid. Not much, but it gets me on stage. I see great players on the web and making YouTube videos and I wonder if I should even show up for the next gig....

Lubricants

I made the very bad mistake of using WD 40 on my guitars. The pedals got progressively stiff. I found a GREAT lubricant which is cleaning my guitar without a total disassembly. It's called CYCLE TUNE UP. I got it at a local bicycle shop. It has 800 350 8999 and is made by EEZ X. The bike shop sold m...

Rocky Mountain Steel Guitar Club Meeting.

Last meeting, even with the snow, we had a great turnout. Pretty much a full house.

Glen Taylor did an outstanding job of playing as well as describing for us some of his practice techniques. Great stuff.

I have a small manufacturing business that ships a ton of stuff UPS. We are in their top 10% users nationally. They recently moved the map out quite a ways on delivery times. In other words, much of what used to be projected as a 4 working day delivery has been shortened to 3 day delivery. UPS works...

Copying material and selling it is theft...period. Selling used is legal, etc, but I know I won't do it. I keep all my lessons and tabs and go back to them from time to time. C6 Boot Scoot

The band wants to do Boot Scoot Boogie. I couldn't "get" anything I liked on E9 so I took a look at C6...which I know nothing about. I found the open E position and played the intro to the song but found I was dropping one note 1/2 step (the "6th") and going up and down the first...
