When I attended Jeff Newman's beginner's course in 1983, Buddy walked, holding a little girl I'd guess to be about three or four years old. Peggy came in just behind them. I presumed the little girl was theirs.

Eddie was the first in-the-flesh steel player I ever met, back when I was 16 or 17. As Rose’s above post indicates, his knack for “gizmo” creativity was ingenious. That first day we met, he was playing a standup Fender, straight double-eight necks that he’d converted to a pedal steel that he...

For years, I've been hearing the knock put on later Sho~Buds equipped with pot-metal parts. I've owned seven pedal steels, including two Zums, but the one I've put the most miles on, far and away, is my 1981 Sho~Bud Super Pro, my first and, tone-wise, still my favorite. In the 33 years I've been pla...

Front or Rear Mounting of Speaker

Apologies if this may have been discussed elsewhere.

I'm wondering if anyone can say from experience whether speakers mounted onto the back of the baffle board (eg. Peaveys) provide superior tone over those that are front-mounted.

Tuning wrench

Sam, go to Sears or an auto parts store & buy yourself a 5 MM nut driver. Much easier to hold & use than the conventional tuning wrenches for steels.

Memories of Eddie

I believe I was 17 when I saw my first real live, in-the-flesh steel player at a venue called Square Acres in Bridgewater, MA. It was the venerable Eddie Cunningham, playing a (double-neck?) stand-up Fender he had converted into a pedal steel with a homemade toilet-chain contraption! (Eddie has ever...

Hi Eddie

I remember from my earliest pickin' days that the father of our old friend, Don Edwards, had a tiple in his Milton home. You might go to Don's website & shoot an e-mail off to him. Maybe he or his sister Judy still has the instrument.

Thanks for the tips & pix, Tom. Your steels look great! I'm in NH & left my Vega at my friend's house down near Rhode Island, so I don't know the model number, but it's one of the more common black & white models I used to see coming into Vega for repair when I worked there as a kid. Com...

Nut for Vega

I recently recovered my old 6-string Vega lap steel after it being missing for four decades. The controls are rusted solid & there's a chunk broken off the nut next to the 5th string, causing the string to buzz. Where, if possible, can I get a ready-made replacement nut? (I'd also be interested ...

Special finger picks

Late in December, I had the end of my right index finger crushed by a towing chain, tearing out half the nail & fracturing the phalanx. About a third of the finger is still badly swollen & will be a long time healing. But I have to get playing again ASAP & will need a special finger pick...

Beware of scam!

A recent Craigs List posting offered a "vintage Sho Bud Pro III Custom" for sale in San Jose for only $800. An accompanying photo showed it to be well worth the very low asking price. I and two other friends sent separate inquiries. None of us (one of whom lives very near San Jose) mention...

Pedal for Sho~Bud Super-Pro, Pro I or Pro II

The pedal rack for my Super-Pro fell & broke one of the pedals. Anyone have a replacement? These are the narrow pedals also used on Pro I and Pro II models, I believe.

Vinnie, scheduling your N.E. Steel Guitar meeting in RI on the same day that the RI group is having its own annual meeting is obviously a bad conflict that can only hurt one or the other or both groups and possibly lead to some bad feelings. While there's still time, I'd strongly suggest one of you ...
