I have found, with my very limited experience, that it is a trade off. With picks, you usually get better "attack": without finger picks, "finger blocking" is alot easier. For me, a thumb pick is always part of the equation.
Thanks guys, Charlie

Bare-Finger pickin'

For about 50 yrs, I have been playing at Sp. Guitar with bare fingers. When I play at steel, I've always used a pair of Nationals -- mostly because everyone else was, and to get the extra "attack"! I recently saw someone, no idea who, on TV playing "bare" fingered. I would like t...

The DVD with Union Station backing Shania was a TV show --40 odd minutes, I think made for our national (CBC), tax-payer supported, network -- they did broadcast it! The one without Shania is filmed in Louisville, Ky; the photo on the back of the box show his "rack", fv, and four "axe...

KSM32 hmmmmmmmmmmmm! I have at least one DVD featuring Mr. Douglas "Live" with Union Station, backing Shania Twain. On that he has all four guitars wired through a foot-volume to a "rack" full of heaven knows what -- delay, and distortion, for two. I must check the other DVD (the...

Tex Emery is the principal designer/builder. I think he's open to inquires at: texbon@shaw.ca
He is somewhere in the middle of Saskatchewan.
Really good player, haven't seen how good a builder he is -- yet!

Texbon guitars

I just received some info, and photos, of, what looks to be, a well made single 10, lap steel. On the end of the fret-board, it says Winnepeg - Canada. Does anyone know who is building them, etc?
Thanks

George Canyon's steel guy

Can one of you gentlemen, or ladies name him? He play a custom built Derby -- Left-handed, and right-footed. Very good player on both necks. Seems to like Bob White (Hank Thompson).

I've been playing various things for over forty years, including steel with pedals, AND WITHOUT. If I were working with it, I would buy a triple 8 (A6th, E6th, B11th -- that would be subject to some minor changes). The only other option I would consider would an S-10 pedal machine -- it would give t...

I see my old comments have been unearthed -- still valid, I guess. I would like to add that I am currently "foolin' around" with a six-string B-11th (two more strings would be nice). Lots of chords! For the first time (on a six) I can find thing like " Song of the Islands", even ...

I am not familiar with your amp, or the store mentioned but there is a fairly dramatic difference between instrument speakers and Hi Fi, or Stereo, speakers. Replaceing the former with the latter will usually render your tone controls somewhat useless. Instrument spkrs are usually a much narrower fr...

Hi James: I'm a little surprised that it has ALL those knobs. Roy T. told me about it, and according to him it only had one pick-up on each neck. On the one I had, the knobs at the right end of each neck was a "fader" between the two pick-ups on each neck. On mine, the "Tone control&q...

Has anyone tried the Peavey Nashville 112? I had a bandit for years -- sounded good to me. The Nashville 112 apears to be a Bandit with a different pre-amp. 15-20lbs lighter, etc/
I know thirty or forty "steel players", only 10% of them have any need of a 200w amp!

Hi Bud: That song is on one of his first Columbia LP's, "Now There Was A Song" early '60's likely. All the cuts but one featured that same steel which certainly sounds like Don Helms (or a good copy-cat).
The album also had two good fiddlers!

Caved in, eh!!!! At least you didn't totally "Suck"! I know a few players for whom that cannot be said (no names -- no way!). I was a little saddened that you went all the way to E9th: you could have had pedals, etc. with a nice C6th or even a Bb6th, or better still Herb R's pedal A6th whi...

I did see something on tuning changers a long time ago. The set-up they talked about was a change from E7th to A6th or 7th, and third option was an E13th which employed elements of both. The National may use a similar technolegy, if so, you will like have to use two variations of G (High G) tunings ...
