The Don Helms book is excellent, and comes with recorded tracks that I accessed online and downloaded into my itunes. Each song in the book has two corresponding tracks to play along with, one with the steel parts, and another with the singing minus the steel parts. For the tuning, I initially tried...

E7 Tuning for Six String Lap Steel: Blue Country Delight

First off, I want to acknowledge the great threads that already exist on this topic. I have read every single post. But most are quite old, so I hope it is okay that I am starting a new one. I will link at the end to the previous threads. I want to also say that I am a newbie (been playing steel 3 y...

Can anyone on this thread recommend tabs for G6 or some tips on to think about the tuning if we know a little C6? The BDEGBD tuning may be better for you You can use A6 TAB, since it's the same pattern up a whole step. Plus the top 3 strings still match your Dobro G tuning. Thank you David. I have ...

I own one six-string lap steel, and I change out the strings every month or so because I am switching tunings, usually moving from GBDGBD to C6. The dobr...

I switched to dobro and lap steel at the beginning of the pandemic, after many years on guitar. I continue to use Troy's site daily, sometimes buying individual lessons and other times purchasing...

Many thanks for your responses. K. Maul: the GHS strings definitely say "LAP G." and they seem to be consistent with what I read on Cindy Cashdollar's site for G.
Allan: I will give the E6 turning a shot!
Thank you all.

Newbie steel player with a lot of string questions

Hi all, Please excuse my long-windedness, and anything I might say that sounds ignorant. Two years ago, after many years of playing standard guitar, I was gifted with a six-string Gretsch electromatic lap steel G5700. I have not looked back. I am now a committed steeler, and have a square-neck reson...
